Opinion: We should not change history

Dear Editor,

Before last Columbus Day, I wrote about the largest genocide in North American history that started and followed Columbus. The United Methodist Church will not celebrate it via a 2015 resolution, and I concur with the church.

Before a hundred years ago, women were treated like cattle before they were entitled to vote in New York State. The Declaration of Independence reads of freedom for men and I believe that is what they meant.

Today, many women do not earn what men do, but I believe in my lifetime, justice has improved, though imperfect!

Recently, in Charlottesville, Va., the town tried to remove a Confederate monument. Emotions rose up on several sides and racism appeared in the headline.

The town tried to change history! You cannot do that! That was the times in our past. We have some good past experiences and some bad ones! There is a tendency to overdo what was wrong.

We each have our separate belief system and we should not change history, because you cannot change it.

Sincerely,

Duane Palmiter
