Readers’ Column for the Week of Sept. 24, 2017

You may call the Owego Pennysaver Readers’ Column at (607) 687-2378 24-hours a day, or e-mail comments to readerscolumn@stny.rr.com. We reserve the right to revise or reject any message.

We had the POW / MIA Vigil at the courthouse square in Owego, and I was surprised that the area was such a mess. The lawn wasn’t mowed, there are weeds, and it looks terrible. It’s only three times a year that we honor veterans – Memorial Day, POW / MIA Vigil, and on Veterans Day. Each time it’s a mess. Does anyone know whom we contact in advance to make sure it doesn’t happen again?

Why are those two cows in the field on Fairfield Road without shelter?

~

It makes me physically sick to know that three people can take a loyal employee of over 30 years, stab that employee in the back, throw them face down in the mud and trample all over them? How can each one of you look at your self in the mirror every day and not throw up?

~

I would just like to say how impressed I was that the Candor candidates removed their campaign signs so quickly after the elections.

~

I’ve collected quite a few box tops for education coupons but I don’t know any kids anymore to give them to. If someone in this column could provide me with an address I’d be willing to mail them to the appropriate party.

~

I just heard a story on TV about children and the opioid addiction. When they are examined at the hospital they show positive for drugs, right? Now stop and think about it. These kids didn’t go to the doctor or the hospital to get these drugs; they got them from their parents. Most of the parents aren’t married, and have five or six kids and we support them, even down to their drugs. That is pathetic! Something should be done with the mothers!

It’s too bad that the new shopper service is available to only high tech folks. Their price is good; I pay $45 to be taken to the store for groceries and other things. The service could save me time and energy, and I suspect many other elderly disabled are in similar need but have only regular phones. Couldn’t they work something out for us?

~

If the Owego road supervisor would respond to letters, phone calls, etc., in some manner, perhaps people might not get quite so frustrated.

~

I am calling in to see who knows what is going on at Thorn Hollow Road in Owego, off of Glenmary Drive? The tower and equipment would imply fracking, yet I thought this state didn’t allow it? It is a military zone up on the hill because they have a person stationed at the end of a private property driveway and two to three times a day the trucks that go in and out of there block the entire road and the men yell and chastise drivers that go by if you get too close to their equipment. I think the community better open their eyes to something that’s going on up on the hill that probably is not good for our local environment or our water.

~

I am a desperate husband in Waverly, New York looking for someone to donate money or get a fundraiser for my wife who needs to go to Geisinger Medical Center in Dansville the middle of next month for an aneurysm surgery. If anybody could help, please call (607) 222-2665.

~

Thank God the world’s democracy does not depend on the opinion of these morons calling into this number.

~

It’s Monday morning, I feel so sorry for the truck drivers for the Town of Owego Highway Department. Sounds like they’re trying to do a job today and their bosses have no clue and have done nothing to prepare for this job. These poor guys take a beating from these idiots.

~

I would like to make a comment on the relocation of the RC Automotive to our neighborhood on 17C across from Tioga Gardens. We have been blessed by not only them moving here, but also by the pride they, husband and wife, take in its appearance. They work endlessly to create a beautiful building and surroundings, recognizing each season and holiday. Thank you RC Automotive. Your neighbors.

~

We are having an OFA Post Prom 2018 Fundraiser. Please donate your bottles and cans at the following locations – A&S Redemption Center, 442 North Ave. in Owego, or The Neighborhood Center, 765 Rte. 17C in Owego. Thank you for your support!

How is it that anti-bullying campaigns are at an all time high, yet we glorify martial arts?

~

This message is to the Owego Highway Department and everyone involved in the repaving of Maple Lane. It’s a fabulous job, you moved out of the way when we had to move our cars and when we got back in you were most accommodating and you did a great job even in the middle of all that. Thank you very much; we appreciate it. Great job from Maple Lane!

Enjoyed reading the positive comments about “The Duck Call”. Both performances were sold out. This was a cooperative effort between Ti-Ahwaga Players and the Newark Valley Historical Society. The Newark Valley Depot has hosted several other theatrical performances in the past. Let’s hope that this can continue and perhaps other groups in the area would like to get in on the action.

~

Was just reading that someone had some National Geographic magazines to pass along. Why don’t you try the local school libraries? I remember when I was in elementary school (circa ‘Old Coot’) all the boys used to try and sneak peaks at some of the articles. Now all they have to do is watch prime time TV, and all forms off social media.

This is in response to a caller a while back who stated that Barden Road in Candor was in first class shape and insinuated that other roads in Candor were the same. First of all, the caller is correct, Barden Road is in very nice condition; however, most roads in Candor are in very poor shape. Money is spent to service a select few and there isn’t enough to support the repairs needed for the remaining roads. Did you know that the current town board voted to fund $60,000 to support the installation of cable TV to some of the rural locations in Candor? Wonder if this money came from the road repair budget? All of the Candor Town board is there for their own agenda. If they tell you anything else they are flat out lying. I think it is time to speak up at the voting machine and get quality people on the Candor Town Board who really care about the taxpayers. The current board does not.

~

I would like to extend a very big thank you to Roy Schreiner from the Tioga County Sheriff’s Office for bringing the Community Service workers to the Nichols Cemetery last Sunday. Their hard wok cleaning monuments, trimming shrubbery and general clean up goes a long way toward keeping our cemetery looking so nice. Thanks again to all.

~

Speaking only for myself, the snowstorm / blizzard we experienced in March 2017, and whatever other snow we’d had up to then was more than enough for one season. Then again I don’t ski or snowmobile.

~

Can anyone identify the plant that seems to be growing completely out of control along some of the secondary roads, like Catatonk Hill Road? Whatever it is, it seems to be taking over the other vegetation like kudzu did in the south. Does this need to be controlled, and is anyone doing anything about it?

National Political Viewpoints

Ban pre-shredded cheese. Make America grate again.

I called in six months ago saying Hillary needs to retire and stay in the background. Now I see the Democrats are saying the same thing. They’re slow learners but they did finally come around.

~

Simply put, Hillary Clinton has no class. I’ve never experienced anyone like her and hope I never do. She needs to put her huge loss behind her and move on. I literally shake when I think of her having possibly won the presidency.

~

In this column last week a reader wondered how come Trump only donated $1 million. You know I must have missed the announcement that Obama, Hillary, Nancy or Chuck and their cronies had donated any money to the relief effort. That shows you how much the Democrats care about regular people. P.S. How about George Soros or Mike Bloomberg who have billions of dollars? No donations, that says it all.

~

The Republicans better shape up and pass a simplified and lower federal tax plan. Ted Cruz’s plan is the best so far. His simple flat tax you can file on a postcard. Everyone pays around 15 percent with no exclusions, no loopholes and not thousands of pages of tax rules. The Republicans must, I say that again, must act fast. Pass tax reform by mid October or get out of business and form a new populous party with more courage to take on the Democrat Marxists who are bankrupting the U.S.A. Go Trump!

~

The recent London bomb suspect was brought to London as a refugee. When will people get it? Close your borders. England must do more to protect her citizens.

~

It’s clear that Hillary is having a pity party just because she didn’t win the election and through writing that book, “What Happened”, she’s trying to get people to join her on her pity party. A good picture for the cover of her book should be a blatting baby that goes waa, waa, waa. She’s trying to get people to join her pity party, but I’m not going to join it. She has no one to blame but herself. Hillary is a loser that won’t admit that she lost.

~

The only way to stop these Hollywood freaks that are badmouthing our president is to boycott their movies.

~

Thank you President Trump for your powerful and candid speech to the United Nations and for standing up for us Americans and for putting us, the American people, first. You have outdone all the others and it’s no wonder us voters who voted for you are extremely happy for your performance. Trump, Trump, Trump!

~

Nobama, the hero of the illegal alien Democrats, is not quite so poor anymore. He will finish off three speeches in the next two weeks at $400,000 each to his favorite Wall Street Banking firms – Northern Trust, Carlisle and Cantor Fitzgerald. His favorite speeches are titled “How I Fooled Them For 8 Years” and “How Hillary Blew a Fixed Election”. The bankers appreciate a good laugh.

Political Update: Las Vegas says Donald Trump is going to prison.

~

To put it simply, Melania Trump is classy. No one else in politics or even Hollywood comes close. All of the negative comments about her are simply the green eyed monster coming out.

~

Hey Trumpsters! Your playboy now says the rich MAY pay more income tax; of course that doesn’t include the mega rich like Donald, because like him they hire mega lawyers to avoid paying any tax. Too bad if you are only rich.

~

President Trump in his inaugural speech to the UN General Assembly says that he will put America first as the leaders of other countries should put their countries first. With that logic it makes sense that the leaders of Iran, North Korea and Cuba are putting their countries first. The logic is flawed. Trump is making the world more dangerous with his flawed logic.

~

To the person who thinks Melania should be speaking better English, wow, can you speak five or six other languages? I am 64 and growing up our neighbors were Italian and the grandmother came from Italy and spoke broken English. She was the sweetest person. Sounds like you need to take a class in manners. You need to look and listen and realize that Melania speaks from the heart, and it is not hard to understand what she is saying. As far as President Trump donating $1 million, if more of the overpaid so called movie stars, sports figures and politicians would each donate 1 million out of their pockets, think of all the aid we can supply to the homeless, the people who lost there homes and loved ones whether it be from floods, fire or what ever disaster that comes along. Come on people, let’s become united and give President Trump a chance like we did Obama.

~

Remember when President Trump had a hissy fit about Ford’s plan to build a new plant in Mexico? Guess what, that plant is now being built in China! We will now be driving Chinese Fiestas instead of Mexican ones. Way to go Donald!

~

What does it take for the Hollywood liberals, the media, and liberal politicians to learn that the VOTERS don’t give a rat’s behind about what they think? The VOTERS signed on to the Trump agenda and want it in motion to completion whether the negative voices want it or not, and most of the negative voices are upset because Trump’s agenda undoes their long standing hold on money and power.

~

Seven of the ten richest counties in America constitute the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. Not a single one creates wealth, they only take wealth. They are rent seekers, people who live off the system rather than produce anything of value.

~

The U.S. Commonwealth of Puerto Rico is our third hurricane disaster this year. It will be the third National disaster the Clinton Foundation ($500M in assets) refuses to provide a penny of relief. If the Clinton Foundation were to provide any assistance their books would be open to inspection. It takes a Democrat. Clinton Foundation = Shakedown Racket.
