Eighteen Tioga County 4-H Market Animal Science members brought their quality-raised animals to the 50th annual 4-H Livestock Sale held during the Tioga County Fair. The 4-H’ers presented their animals in shows during the week, met with prospective buyers and then sold the animals for a sale total of $17,125.25.
The grand champion market steer raised by Tyler Weidman, Animal Aholics 4-H Club, weighed 1,133 lbs., and was purchased by Ward and Van Scoy, Inc. of Owego, N.Y. for $1.45 per pound.
The reserve grand champion market steer raised by Alysa Williams, Animal Aholics 4-H Club, weighed 1,167 lbs., and was purchased by Bryan’s Meat Cutting in Milan, Pa. for $2.00 per pound. The breeder of the grand champion market steer was JCW Farms of Candor, N.Y.
Three market steers sold for an average of $1.74 per pound.
The grand champion market hog raised by Ryan Huizinga, Flora and Fauna Friends 4-H Club, weighed 276 lbs. and was purchased by Ralph Porter, Waverly, N.Y. for $3.50 per pound.
The reserve grand champion market hog raised by Emily Henry, Flora and Fauna Friends 4-H Club, weighed 192 lbs. and was purchased by Ward and Van Scoy, Inc. of Owego, N.Y. for $3.00 per pound. The breeder of the grand champion market hog was Luke Nichols, East Smithfield, Pa.
Sixteen market hogs sold for an average of $2.05 per pound.
The grand champion market lamb raised by Brody Hines, All Over Clover Kids 4-H Club, weighed 85 lbs. and was purchased by Aaron Gowan for $6.00 per pound.
The reserve grand champion market lamb was raised by Ryan Huizinga, Flora and Fauna Friends 4-H Club, weighed 155 lbs. and was purchased by Legacy Motors of Sayre, Pa. for $3.75 per pound.
Three lambs sold for an average of $3.33 per pound. The breeder of the grand champion market lamb was Frank Wiles of Owego, N.Y.
The grand champion market goat raised by Rosie Hines, All Over Clover Kids 4-H Club, weighed 110 lbs. and was purchased by Hottle Livestock out of Wysox, Pa. for $3.00 per pound.
The reserve grand champion market goat, also raised by Rosie Hines, weighed 81 lbs. and was purchased by Frank Graves of Adams, N.Y. for $2.50 per pound.
Two goats sold for an average of $2.79 per pound. The breeder of the grand champion market goat was Ken Clarke of Candor, N.Y.
Daniel Popp, Hoof and Claw 4-H Club raised the grand champion meat bird pen. It held five birds and was purchased by Goodrich Auction Service, Inc. of Owego, N.Y. for $37.50.
The reserve grand champion meat bird pen was raised by Madison Peabody, All Over Clover Kids 4-H Club, and was purchased by David Van Dusen of Barton, N.Y. for $50.00.
The grand champion market rabbit was raised by Daniel Popp, Hoof and Claw 4-H Club, and was purchased by Goodrich Auction Service, Inc. for $40.00.
Through active participation in the 4-H Market Animal Science program, members learn valuable life skills such as record keeping, animal care and responsibility, presentation, marketing and communication.
