Over Labor Day weekend in Nichols, N.Y., and in conjunction with the annual Nichols Old Home Days event, there will be a special display focused on World War II.

According to Pat Murphy, there will be three tents set up during Labor Day weekend at Kirby Park that will contain officer and WAC uniforms, a medical field tent with displays, officer sleeping tents, cots, foot lockers, mess kits, and other historic artifacts from World War II.

Herbert O’Loughlin, Sr., a native of Newark Valley, owns the display.

Murphy explained that O’Loughlin Sr. has been collecting for six years, and has attended regular re-enactments in New York, Pennsylvania and Ohio. The display, she added, is a World War II museum on wheels that will be open to the public over Labor Day weekend.

The Nichols Old Home Days has been taking place for over 100 years, and this year’s event will take place at Kirby Park on Sept. 3 and 4. The annual parade will kick off on Sept. 4 at 10:01 a.m. in downtown Nichols.

According to Mayor Lesley Pelotte, the park has been cleaned up since the flash flooding, and they had many volunteers that helped including employees from Tioga Downs, and groups from other areas around the Southern Tier. Members from the community involved with soccer and little league also assisted with clean up.

At the park on Sept. 3, there will be a car and tractor show, and the Nichols Fire Department will be hosting a water ball competition with other departments participating.

Events begin at 10 a.m. on both Sunday and Monday.

Other activities include a performance by the Kirby Band on Monday, Doc Possum will entertain children, there will be craft vendors, food vendors, and the Nichols Legion will be serving hot dogs on Monday, and the fire department will be hosting their annual chicken barbecue.

The Nichols ROKI hosts the Old Home Days event.
