Outstanding presentation of 100th Anniversary of Women’s Suffrage

Dear Editor,

Congratulations for an outstanding presentation to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of Women’s Suffrage held on Saturday, Aug. 19, 2017 at the Tioga County Courthouse.

The highlight of the event was surely the outstanding address by Susan B. Anthony to the large courtroom audience, and it kept us spellbound. Additionally, a big thank you to the entire event committee, the volunteers, court officers (three), musicians, the Suffragette’s in period dress, tour guides, and the public response.

Especially noteworthy was all the work and speeches of Chair of the Tioga County Legislature Martha Sauerbrey, Assemblywoman Donna Lupardo, and Tioga County Historian Emma Sedore. State Senator Fred Akshar presented a large plaque commemorating this women’s suffrage event also.

Overall, this multifaceted event allowed us to appreciate more and better understand the history and landmark efforts, bravery and perseverance of all the many champions who struggled for more than 60 years to advocate and gain legislation for the 1917 New York State Law giving Women the right to vote. This was three years before the Federal Law allowing Women the right to vote was enacted.

Owego New York’s participation in this historical movement was illustrated in Saturday’s event.

Sincerely,

Brian Bokar
