Tioga County Public Health teams up with Tioga Opportunities for 119 Healthy Neighborhoods Visits

Tioga County Public Health teamed up with Tioga Opportunities to complete 119 Healthy Neighborhoods Visits recently. The visits included checking for things like working fire detectors and carbon monoxide detectors, and replacing those that no longer work properly.

Public Health employees also checked for trip hazards in the apartments and indoor air quality, especially for those with asthma. Residents are given a “goody bag” with a variety of different things including non-slip shower mats, cleaning supplies, Tioga County Resources Guide, and a personalized Healthy Neighborhood cup to help keep them hydrated all summer long.

When asked about the visits, Public Health Sanitarian Al Knapp shared, “Doing these visits creates a good partnership between the two different agencies. While the annual inspections are being done on their end, we are also doing outreach through our Healthy Neighborhoods Program. We hope to continue this partnership and do these visits together yearly.”

Tioga Opportunities employee BriAnn Schweitzer stated, “These visits from the Public Health Department are great for our residents. They are also helping our residents learn about other services that are available for them out there that they would not have known about otherwise.”

After just three days, these visits had already proven to be extremely beneficial to all residents, especially those who have asthma and are looking for additional ways to help reduce their asthma triggers.

Healthy Neighborhoods Visits are free and available for all Tioga County residents. There are no income requirements, and each visit is personalized for your family’s needs. Each visit also comes with over $100 of giveaways that include a variety of cleaning supplies, as well as an option for baby proofing supplies for families with little ones.
