Your opinion matters at the polls!

Dear Editor,

We, the Mayor and Village of Owego board of Trustees, would like to encourage all Village residents to get out and vote YES on Aug. 1 on both local laws. A proposal to abolish the Village Court and a proposal to make the Clerk-Treasurer position appointed rather than elected.

Last week we published a letter detailing our reasoning for these proposals and what the future might look like if these laws pass or don’t pass. The Board and Mayor have talked about these issues, had meetings, worked on legislation, taken phone calls from residents, spoken to department heads, worked on a budget, written letters and much more. But now is your time to speak on what you want to pay for and how you want this village run! Now is your time to tell us how the village finances will be managed, how your tax dollars are spent and the future of the village.

In March of 2016, you spoke on who you want to manage your village by electing half of us. In March 2017, you spoke again on who you want to manage your village by electing the other half of us. Now those same people you elected into office have given you a choice and a chance to speak about the changes we have told you the last two years we wanted to make.

We as a board presented two laws that will eliminate a money losing Village Court service that is duplicated through the Town of Owego court system (that you currently pay for in your Town tax bill) and a law, which will allow us to appoint an accountant or bookkeeper with professional accounting experience. Don’t let a vocal minority tell you that the status quo of years past is working for you. Your opinion matters at the polls!

Voting will take place at the Village of Owego Central Fire Station, located at 87 North Ave. in Owego, on Tuesday, Aug. 1 between noon and 9 p.m.

Sincerely,

Village of Owego Mayor May and Board of Trustees
