For generations, fair-goers have been drawn to a fan favorite at the Tioga County Fair, the demolition derby. The derby, held at Marvin Park in Owego, N.Y., draws spectators of all ages, and competitors never disappoint. Qualifying heats will run at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 2, with finals to be held at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 5.

Early entry fee is $25, which includes the driver and one helper, and payment must be received on or before July 26. Registration for the day of the demo derby is $35, which includes access to the pits and fair. Pit pass for ages 16 and over is $20, and includes access to the fair. Note, the registration fee only covers the driver, helpers must pay the $20 pit pass.

For spectators, there is a $5 grandstand admission fee.

Classes for the derby include the following – 1) Modified Compact for six and four cylinder vehicles; six cylinder cars must be front-wheel drive; no all-wheel drive or 4×4 cars will be allowed; 2) Stock V8, open to any year passenger car; 3) Stock Compact; 4) Mini Trucks and Mini Vans.

Also, Ken Tunnicliff, owner of Downtown Movers, is sponsoring a “Last Chance Qualifier” for all compact entrants excluding heat winners. Mini Van and mini truck entrants must compete in a car. 

The winner of the “Last Chance Qualifier” will earn $300 (1st place), $100 (2nd place) and $100 (third place). Last Chance top three will also move up to the Compact Feature.  

Additionally, a very special “Best of Show” winner, selected by the cheers from the crowd, will receive $500 from Downtown Movers.

Drivers must be age 16 or older and hold a valid driver’s license. Tioga State Bank is serving as the major sponsor for this year’s demolition derby at the fair.

Also, the popular “Power Wheels” Derby will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday evening. Entrants must be eight years of age or under, wear a bicycle helmet, and be accompanied by at least one adult.  

There is no fee to enter your child, however, all adults must purchase a pit pass. And, of course, all adults must sign the Standard Liability Waiver for themselves as well the Minor Liability Waiver on behalf of the child.
