Readers’ Column for the week of July 23, 2017

You may call the Owego Pennysaver Readers’ Column at (607) 687-2378 24-hours a day, or e-mail comments to readerscolumn@stny.rr.com. We reserve the right to revise or reject any message.

The best thing about being over thirty is that we made fools of ourselves mostly before social media.

There will be a Richford Neighborhood Watch meeting on Wednesday, July 26, at 7 p.m. at the Richford Town Hall on Bowery Lane. Representatives from the Tioga County Sheriff’s Department will be there to answer questions and discuss ways to be safe in your own home and neighborhood. All Richford residents are urged to attend. For more information, call Mindi at 259-3814.

There are a number of inaccuracies in this column concerning the village and the town purchasing and being involved in the possibility of purchasing electricity for its residents. First of all, if there is a storm, NYSEG will still be the group that would come to your home, fix the wires and fix the poles. They still are responsible for delivery. Secondly, the village or the town will not be receiving any commission check for being so nice for signing you up. The third thing, MEGA does not have and has never had any natural gas interests or any ties to natural gas.

The subject is bats. How do they get in your house? I’m on the first floor and somehow they get in. I see no cracks, I shut off a lot of the rooms, how do they get in? I just had contact with two this week! Any suggestions? Anybody please!

~

This is from a concerned resident on Temple Street. There are dogs near Paige that bark constantly from 5:30 in the morning until the owner goes to work for 12 hours, then they come and let them out around 5:30 or 6:00 in the evening and they are in a little tiny pen with no room to roam. They are cooped up all day and when they come outside they bark constantly. Is anybody aware of the fact that there is a no bark law in the village of Owego and there is also a noise ordinance? I’m tired of listening to them. Somebody do something please!

~

I’d like to take a survey of your readership. Does anybody at all buy anything at all off these television infomercials?

~

A lot of people in our area are 100 percent for fracking, but I also understand the concerns of the environmentalists. The only solution is to have a few test wells around the state and monitor them for an acceptable amount of time. I’m sure the gas companies will be so super careful and that we’ll all wish we’d been fracking for years. Thirty some other states can’t be wrong!

Well I guess it’s official. The Town of Owego Highway Superintendent has someone running against him this year. I think its time that Owego makes a change for the better for our roads and our community. I’m glad to see this gentleman is out doing his own petition rather than what Mark Clark is doing, having somebody else carrying it so that he doesn’t have to face people and tell them the truth, that he doesn’t know how to do his job. So let’s vote for the new guy town of Owego. Let’s put someone else in the Highway Department.

~

I was wondering what a person has to do in the Town of Owego to get our roads mowed. The county highway and the town roads look great! The ones in the Town of Owego look terrible and the ones that they have mowed, they only half mow them. Do we have to hire someone to mow in front of our houses now or what’s the deal? Someone let me know please.

This is about this hurried up world that we live in today. How many people who are late for work are on your bumper when you’re driving? They don’t use their turning signal, they pass you on the yellow line, they don’t yield, and they’re rude to you; it’s a hurried up world. No one obeys the rules anymore. There should be cameras all over at the red lights and on the roads, catching people who don’t obey these rules. I have seen brand new cars that don’t use their turn signals when they turn. You can’t tell me they have broken turning signals. That’s telling me they are being ignorant, they don’t care, we’re in a hurried up world. If they are in that much of a hurry, then get up, get out of the house early, take your time, go to work, stop the road rage, and stop the killing because of it! Please stop it and hopefully pay attention to the rules.

~

Is anyone else tired of the Medicaid advertisements, especially on television? When getting home from a hard day’s work, I hear these commercials about all the freebies through Medicaid. I’d just like to say, nothing is free; it comes from my hard work of 40 plus hours a week.

~

This is to the gentleman who rescued a dog last winter. He rescued a dog off Main Street. Too bad he wasn’t around when it got hit by a car and killed; it was just a little dog. But there are three more and they’re loose all the time. People don’t seem to care about them; they are in the yards and in the road. If you drive by, try for the little black one – she is extremely friendly. They have no collars on them, I don’t know who owns them but they’re loose all the time. I just don’t want them to get hurt.

~

Have you been to Tioga Gardens lately? It is gorgeous! Really awesome, you could just stay and look at all those beautiful flowers landscaped so perfectly. What work has been done there! Even the restroom is lovely.

~

Just wondering if anybody knows why there are afghan blankets wrapped around trees in the courthouse square. I had some visitors recently and they asked and I didn’t know the story because I’m new to the area. If anybody could help I’d really appreciate it.

By going out to bid for 100 percent renewable energy as our default electricity supply, the Town of Owego and MEGA could aggregate sufficient numbers of people to both drop the price adequately and help the actual transition occur. This would be a huge leap in fostering the health of our families and our planet.

EnviroNews USA Editorial Board April of 2017: “An examination of nuclear energy from point A, where the drill bit hits the ground in the initial quest for uranium, to the process of uranium enrichment and zirconium-clad fuel rod production, on to energy generation, power plant dismantlement, nuclear waste disposal and finally uranium mine remediation, nuclear power presents anything but a clean and green energy paradigm.”

“The history of the white working class has been a history of being an exploited people. However, we’ve been an exploited people that further exploits other exploited people. While we’ve been living in tenements and slums for centuries, we’ve also been used by the rich to attack our neighbors, coworkers, and friends of different colors, religions and nationalities.” [David Strano, a founding member] “I grew up playing in the woods, floating coolers of beer down a river, shooting off fireworks, just generally raising hell, all that kind of stuff, things most people would consider a part of redneck culture. We’re trying to acknowledge the ways we’ve made mistakes and bought into white supremacy and capitalism, but also give ourselves an environment in which it’s OK to celebrate redneck culture.” [Max Neely, member of the Mason-Dixon branch] “Redneck Revolt: The Armed Left-Wing Group That Wants to Stamp Out Fascism” The Guardian UK. “Bernard [Decleroq] recalls certain contemporary farmers around the world who have tapped into something beyond conventional soil sciences to influence what happens to the seed and land. A Mexican farmer, Jose Carmen Garcia Martinez grows 8 lbs. onions. A Russian farmer, Svetlana, who stands with her arms outstretched over her fields, can make her plants grow taller and faster. These farmers understand the links and cosmic connections.” from “Holding the Cosmos in Our Hands”. Posted by Lauren Ladov. May 25, 2017

The group purchase electricity ideas being discussed are about who produces the electricity and getting a bulk price from them. NYSEG is still responsible for delivering it to your home or business and maintaining and repairing the delivery system.

The Apalachin Lions Club maintains the park at the corner of Main Street and Route 434, which has the Apalachin New York sign. A recent trim plus some flowers from the garden club has it looking great. Glad to see the American flag flying again on a new pole. Thanks to the Lions Club and their members.

National Political Viewpoints

You know I have to ask myself, what kinds of people watch Fox News? Do they even try to watch MSNBC or CNN? I’m just curious I guess.

~

Citizens – if you have been paying attention, you know that the Democrats and the media are doing everything they can to remove Trump and tie up the Trump administration from fulfilling the terms on which they campaigned. Call your representatives and tell them to pass tax reform and repeal and replace Obamacare as their reelection is in jeopardy.

~

I agree with the caller about the old guard senate republicans. If Mitch McConnell and Paul Ryan cannot reach a consensus on healthcare and tax breaks, then President Trump should find a way to fire them. McConnell never even contacted an opponent like Rand Paul about reaching a compromise on the repeal and replace of the disastrous nobamacare plan. The Russian connection is a biased media hoax and is overblown hogwash by known buffoons.

~

The Democrats forced Obamacare down the throats of the American people. Now that it is imploding under its own weight they cannot be found. They’ve left the American people to fix the problem, all for political gain. They created the problem and they are in hiding.

~

Why is it that it seems like there is no law being enforced against any Republican politician? What is wrong with this country? Why is it that Republicans are not held accountable when they break the law? For instance, a judge issues a 30-day court order that all the information has to be released about contact with the Russians to the Trump campaign manager, and they pass it up and don’t do it and nothing’s being done. Mr. Jeff Sessions, our famous attorney general, is asked a question under oath and he says he doesn’t have to answer it because you already know the answer to that. And Jared Kushner, our beloved President’s son in law who is as crooked as they get, is breaking the law daily. He’s lied under oath, he’s lied about everything you can imagine along with his beloved Mr. Donald, and nothing’s being done about it. Why are the Republicans above the law and our congress sits back looking the other way and saying it’s fake news. Fake news my butt! It’s fake news because they don’t like it and they’re trying to cover it up.

~

What I’m hoping is that President Trump erects a real tall wall between the Southern Tier and New York City.

~

It is interesting to note that the Socialist Democrat media is more interested in Donald Junior’s emails than it was about Hillary Clinton’s 30,000 erased emails. Do you sense some hypocritical bias in how President Trump’s team is being scrutinized and how nobama’s was? If you have a brain, you certainly do!

~

I sure hope Mickey Mouse runs against Claudia Tenney. It should be a landslide in his favor.

~

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again! I am so happy Mr. Trump is in that White House. I couldn’t be happier with my vote for Mr. Trump. This is in response to last week’s caller asking if people that voted for Trump are happy with their vote. Yes, I am!

~

“Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance and the gospel of envy. It’s inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery” – Winston Churchill. This is the Democrats ideal.

~

I have a great solution for great healthcare for all of us. Give us the same insurance that Washington big shots have and everyone will be happy – period! So simple!

~

One of the greatest fallacies of modern times is that income tax credits will help low income folks buy health insurance. After decades of low to zero interest rates, lower income people have to cut into the principal of their savings. Lower principal means even lower income until they hit the wire where no income taxes are paid at all. So, where does income tax credit help us? The solar energy credits are of no help to us either except for those with adequate income to have bought the system themselves and with no help. Come on legislators, either use some common sense or put low-income folks on your discovery panels to help you realize the stark realities of many who worked all their lives that are being treated as deadbeats by you.

~

Is there any doubt that Fat Donny two scoops is completely beholden to Putin? He has a special follow up performance review with his boss with no other American present. What is he hiding? What is he giving away? His raving lunatic interview threatening the Department of Justice investigations that keep edging closer to Trump family corruption and their collusion with Russian criminals. How many more of his inner circle will be caught up in the investigation? You look more like a criminal enterprise than committee to elect a president.

~

Sean Hannity is right. The GOP is pampered, overpaid and spoiled. Completely worthless.

~

Someone postulated that Trump has never done anything illegal. Perhaps they should review the housing discrimination suit, the use of illegal aliens and not following labor laws suit, and the thousands of suits for welching on contracts.

~

The person commenting on the stock market ups and downs ought to do bit more research.

Imagine living in a country that provides great healthcare to its elected officials but denies the same to its people. Come to think of it, I guess I do.

How about having a face to face conversation about some of these political disagreements? It is easy to hide behind anonymous postings. It is harder to actually discuss relevant topics that could improve our country or to run for and serve in office. The problem is not the government, the media or social media – the problem is that people are lazy, voice opinions to their computer, and don’t actually talk to each other anymore. This is me, talking to my computer. I would be happy to meet up and discuss any ideas face to face.
