Tioga County to dedicate historic marker

A dedication ceremony of an historical marker will be held on Friday, July 14, at 11 a.m. at 18 Front St. in Owego, N.Y. The marker commemorates the home of Elizabeth Browne Chatfield, who was the private secretary and personal friend of Susan B. Anthony.

When Miss Anthony came to Owego and spoke at the Tioga County Courthouse, she was Mrs. Chatfield’s overnight guest on the night of March 28, 1894.

The erection of this marker is in conjunction with the 100th Anniversary celebration when New York State women won the chance to vote for the first time in history; three years before the 19th Amendment passed.

This marker was generously provided through a grant from the William G. Pomeroy Foundation.
