‘BOOKS’ Program holds graduation party for outstanding participants

BOOKS (Books Open Opportunities for Kids to Succeed), a program funded by a New York State Grant from Senator Fred Akshar (R-C-I: Binghamton), hosted a “Graduation Party” to celebrate this year’s participating students on Saturday, June 10, at Animal Adventure Park located in Harpursville, N.Y. Senator Akshar was on hand to personally congratulate the children.

Participants in the BOOKS Reading Rewards Program span from preschool age to the sixth grade. In order to earn an invitation to the Graduation Party, children in the Program had to complete eight reading steps totaling over 280 hours of logged reading time between June 1, 2016 and May 31, 2017. This equals about 50 minutes of reading each day of the year.

Invitees and their families enjoyed a fun-filled day of food and excitement. To celebrate their achievement, the “graduates” enjoyed a delicious barbeque picnic. In addition, they spent the day at the zoo and had the opportunity to feed the animals, including the now “world-famous” April the Giraffe.
