A sunny and beautiful rain-free day drew guests to an open-class car show on June 10 at the Apalachin Firemen’s Field. Hosted by the “Brothers for the Cross” men’s group associated with the Apalachin United Methodist Church and including other partner churches, the first annual event raised funds for the church group’s mission work to help others in need.

“Brothers for the Cross,” a local chapter of the United Methodist Men (UMM), is a faith-based group of men with its home base out of the Apalachin United Methodist Church located at 303 Pennsylvania Ave. in Apalachin, N.Y.  All men are welcome to join, and need not be of the Methodist faith to participate.

Dozens of cars and trucks, motorcycles and tractors were lined up on what was the location for the longstanding Apalachin Firemen’s Field Days. Trophies were awarded in five categories including one trophy for Best of Show, and three trophies each, designated as first, second and third place for Best Car, Best Tractor, Best Motorcycle and Best Truck.

A sunny and beautiful rain-free day drew guests to an open-class car show on June 10 at the Apalachin Firemen’s Field.  Food, fun and door prizes were also a draw.

Mark Jones, president of the Upper New York Conference of the UMM in Syracuse, attended the show and presented a pin to John Calkins, who was named the new President of the local UMM chapter, which includes, in addition to the Apalachin United Methodist Church, the Little Meadows, Whittemore Hill and Park Terrace Methodist Churches.

Car show enthusiasts were asked to donate a small admission fee or food donation for the Park Terrace food pantry, and registration fees were also designated to charity. A breakfast and lunch vendor was available, with profits slated for the Park Terrace food pantry and Kali’s Klubhouse.

Church members sold pie and other refreshments, with sales going toward non-profits associated with feeding people in need. Scouts from Apalachin Troop 32 were on hand selling fresh-made lemonade and scooped ice cream, while games and other activities filled what was once used as Firemen’s Field Day booths. Several guests walked away with door prizes and a number of sponsors were thanked for making the first annual open-class car show a success.

The UMM welcomes men to attend monthly meetings held the first Thursday of the month at 8:30 a.m., at the Blue Dolphin restaurant located on Rte. 434 in Apalachin. For additional information, call the Apalachin United Methodist Church office at (607) 625-2733.
