Veterans Monument to be constructed in Candor

The Maple Grove Cemetery board has approved the construction of a Town of Candor Veterans Monument. The Candor Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring a fund drive and collecting donations.

The black granite stone will include U.S. Merchant Mariners, whose mortality rate was higher then that of the Marines in WW2. Though they did not fire rifles or handguns, Merchant Mariners nonetheless served under fire. One in every 29 Merchant Mariners who served overseas died in the service.

The inscription to be determined may read, “IN HONOR OF ALL WHO SERVED FROM THE TOWN OF CANDOR IN THE MILITARY FORCES OF THE USA IN WAR AND PEACE TO DEFEND AND PRESERVE OUR FREEDOM AND IN LOVING MEMORY OF THOSE WHO GAVE THE ULTIMATE SACRIFICE.”

Donations may be made payable to the Candor Chamber of Commerce (note Veterans Memorial Monument on the memo line) and mail to P.O. Box 32, Candor, N.Y. 13743.

If you are participating in Flea Fix 96 this year, please consider donating a portion or all of the proceeds to this cause. Your generosity will be noted in the Facebook ads for your sale.

The group has started a new Facebook site, Candor Veterans Memorial. Please visit, like, and participate.
