Readers’ Column for the week of May 21, 2017

Yes, there actually are people who read the column on bridge in the newspaper and many of us also play bridge every Tuesday at the senior center in Owego. Anyone interested may look into it there.

We want to thank Visions Federal Credit Union for sponsoring the three hours of free shredding today out at Marvin Park. The volunteers stood in the rain and collected our things to be shredded from our cars; we did not have to get out. That was a wonderful service to the community and many took advantage of it. Thank you to Visions Federal Credit Union!

To the person who called regarding the National Flood Insurance program’s community ratings system, it sounds like you’ve done your homework. Have you presented this information to the board with no results? If so, many would volunteer to help you get a petition signed. I imagine you would get a lot of signatures.

~

To the person looking for the VCR, have you tried online sources such as eBay?

~

There are hours of loud gunfire in the Campville and Apalachin area, even on holidays. Constant loud gunfire. Is anybody else bothered by this?

~

Positive things happen all around us every day. We need to see them. On Monday morning when strong winds blew papers from a neighbor’s recycle bin into the yard and ditch, we thought we’d be picking up the mess. Instead, the Taylor Garbage recycle worker picked up every piece and left the area completely free of litter. What a nice and responsible act from the Taylor staff.

A blue parakeet named “Pretty Boy” flew out the door near Pine Street in Waverly. Call (607) 687-5620 or (607) 972-6930 if you have found the bird.

Is the Village of Owego going to allow the railroad to leave the Main Street crossing in such a state that almost every time going over it almost bottoms out coming off of the new rails they just put in there? That’s really dangerous.

~

I’d like to thank the two State Police who came to the aid of my neighbor in the middle of the night. They were very calm and caring as they stayed with her. Nice to know we have that protection out of town.

~

Why don’t they open up the fairgrounds for alternative parking while Lake Street is being torn up? It’s within walking distance of the stores. Probably the Hickories would work with some kind of a shuttle bus. Just a thought.

~

Who will run for Spencer Town Clerk, Supervisor, and Council in November? There is lots of work to be done. Changes need to be made. Get your name out there.

~

All one needs do to run for the school board is to file the necessary paperwork. There is no requirement as to place of employment or business ownership. If Ms. Sweppenheiser wants to add a new perspective to the board, all she needs to do is run and get enough votes.

~

Someone needs to do more research on the school budget process. There is a one re-vote limit.

~

Tioga County residents who keep chickens on THIER property have no rights to OTHER resident’s property. Your free roaming chickens are not desired on my property. You have a chicken fenced area; use it to contain your nasty chickens. Local town Supervisors should review the FOWL ordinance to include all single-family residences that are zoned residential. This will allow the Code Enforcer to issue ticket.

~

This is for all you engineers from NYS DOT. Must be we just can’t find time for the guys to patch holes. Or do we contract that out now? So, my pledge and to the tax paying people of Tioga County, let’s just not pay our taxes until we are damn good and ready. I think we still have some law that we can’t pave before a date or after another date. However, the bridge rebuilt last year in Campville has been all paved THIS YEAR. Why can’t we get these deep nasty holes filled in?

~

Lake Street is going to be closed for a long time. Which is creating a severe parking problem. Perhaps the village should contact the Elks and offer a stipend for daytime use when the parking lot is mostly empty. They could discount their village tax for a year or whatever. They could also contact the Legion as their lot is almost empty every day. There should be no charge for the Legion as they are exempt from village taxes. A postal drop off would be nice, too.

~

While Lake Street is being torn up, I wonder is it would be possible for the Post Office to lower the drop off box so that drivers in sedans would be able to deposit mail more easily? It is great for pickups but difficult for regular vehicles now.

For prom and graduation season, Trinity-CASA of Tioga provided prom safety cards and parent handbooks for graduating seniors to participating school districts and local businesses. We would like to thank Candor Central, Newark Valley, Owego Free Academy, Spencer Van-Etten, Tioga Central, and Waverly school districts for participating in our safe prom and graduation campaign. We would also like to thank Ye Olde Country Florist in Owego and Jayne’s Flowers and Gifts in Waverly for distributing our prom safety cards. Trinity-CASA wishes all families a safe prom and graduation season!

National Political Viewpoints

Let’s face it. Trump is going to be impeached. I told you so.

~

The erratic and hysteric Democrats are a joke. They are spouting nonsense as usual. President Trump should eliminate the daily press briefings, which are ludicrous. Trump should reopen investigations of Susan Rice, Hillary Clinton, Lois Lerner and Huma Abedin, and other criminals who escaped prosecution by political crony intervention. Go Trump!

~

Last week’s column caller is full of prunes. There’s no way President Trump has taken as many and more vacations in 100 days as the Obama’s did in eight years. The Obama’s were famous for their lavish trips all over the world at our expense and they accomplished nothing. Trump has made great things happen in his small amount of trips in only 100 plus days and I will gladly pay for them as a taxpayer because he gets results, real results. Republicans do that you know. Go Trump! Thanks for giving Comey the boot by the way; it was long overdue. You’ve got my blessing!

~

Nice try liberals! All the fancy ten-dollar words that you use make no difference. Your Democratic party is falling apart. The people have spoken and we support Donald Trump, Mike Pence, Claudia Tenney and Tom Reed. The truth is squashing out the fake news. You fear mongers are obsolete!

~

Yes, the truth does win as last week’s caller states. That’s why it won the election. Fear mongering and blatant fake news is what some people preach and it is demonstrably false. Some people think they can predict how much tax money President Trump will spend traveling over the next eight years. They must have a crystal ball and taro cards and all! Here are some facts for you non-Trump supporters. Remember the midnight vacation Obama took to Iran, bringing them $550 billion dollars in cash? That was $550 billion of our taxpayer money and we never did find out what it was really for. Typical Democrat tactics. I don’t think President Trump could ever top that blunder from the Obama administration.

~

I spoke with Fred Akshar’s office, and the New York State budget has bridge funding available. Now the town and village of Newark Valley can apply for funding to replace Silk Street and Dr. Knapp Road bridges. This would assure quicker access for ambulances, fire and school buses, and would encourage folks to move here.

~

Wouldn’t it be great if chuckles Schumer and plastic Pelosi would say something intelligent and useful instead of spreading propaganda and hatred? Wouldn’t that be great?

~

To the college bound – don’t expect a free ride for your education. Bad idea for America. If you can’t finance it yourself and want it bad enough, consider the option of the GI bill. Your service to our country is worth it to every taxpayer for a free education.

~

I finally figured out when our president is lying. If you watch him, it’s when he moves his mouth.

~

It was disgusting to watch Trump, Pence, Claudia Tenney, Paul Ryan, and Trump millionaire cronies on the day Trumpcare got passed. I, myself, am very lucky to have good health insurance and thought it was the most disgusting decision knowing that poor people will suffer. I bet those Republicans all go to church every Sunday. These 116 days are absolutely the worst for the United States so far. No one should have to babysit a 70-year-old man. Yeah Trump, keep it up, you’re doing a great job! You’ll be gone soon because loose lips sink ships. There is a God after all.

~

Is there any doubt now about the president being a Russian puppet? Any doubt about his lack of self control.  His intellect. His inability to grasp even the simplest of concepts. His spectacularly feeble vocabulary. His whining like the precious little snowflake he is. His clownish behavior puts us all at risk. I fear he will remain as long as the republicans in congress think they have gotten everything they can get for themselves. After all, congress repealed Obamacare, also known as the original republican healthcare plan, for you but not for them. Since they are almost all millionaires, the tax breaks that are coming are for them, not you. Keep watching Fox News and listening to their ilk, fools.

~

Really good to hear one of the pundits on TV make the statement that it’s good to have a leader in the White House, instead of a lecturer! When you see these mobs of protestors on TV, realize that Nobama, the “Community Organizer” who really never moved beyond that, has recruited about 30,000 fellow community organizers. They are paid and given their marching orders by Nobama and the DNC. They’re doing what they are instructed and paid to do.

~

We tend to forget that President Trump is an old man. I wonder if some of his bizarre behavior can be attributed to early dementia. President Eisenhower said that no one older than 70 should occupy the oval office. Donald Trump is 72.
