To the taxpayers of the Apalachin Fire District

Dear Editor,

The following is an open letter to the Apalachin Fire District taxpayers.

Thank you to all of you who’ve reached out and inquired or commented on the new fire station project. We are rapidly approaching an inflection point in our project, as site work will come to a temporary pause in the middle of May for approximately one month. The reason for the delay is to allow for the curing of the concrete and awaiting the arrival of the prefabricated steel in mid-June. Accordingly, don’t be alarmed if you don’t see construction activity for a few weeks, it’s all part of the plan and as of right now, we’re still on schedule.

As we’ve shared in the past, operations have been successfully moved to our satellite stations. I’d like to ask the public for their cooperation in avoiding the rear parking lot of Station 2 (Route 434 by the ball fields) during baseball and softball season. There are dozens of responders that now report to Station 2 and they will need all available parking spots at the fire station. It is possible, if not likely, that your vehicle could be blocked in when there is a 911 call they are responding to.

The interior LED lighting upgrades to Station 2 and 3 that the Fire District received a grant from NYSEG on have been completed. We expect to receive 20-plus years of service from these upgrades in addition to lowering our operating costs.

The district has also hired a part-time caretaker to ensure the maintenance of our buildings and other assets are well cared for and preserved for many years to come. Following our first quarter review of the financials in April, your Fire District is running at or better than budget thus far. You have the commitment of all Commissioners to ensure we continue that trend.

Thank you all once again for your support of our volunteer firefighters. If you have any questions, compliments or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact me with the details below.

Sincerely,

Brian Rieber
