Candor Historical Society to present on the demise and return of the white tailed deer

The Candor Historical Society will host guest speaker Ed Nizalowski on Wednesday, March 29, at the Candor Town Hall at 7 p.m. Nizalowski will speak on the demise and return of the white tailed deer.

In the early days of settlement there were so many deer that some pioneers paid off their mortgage with deerskins. By the mid-19th century, white tailed deer were gone due to lack of hunting regulations and loss of forest cover.

In the early 20th century the white tail reappeared, creating quite a sensation for all the local newspapers. It was also a protected species by this time. This period also marked the return of other species as well to include black bears, beavers and the coyote.

Most of the public, including hunters and farmers, wanted to keep the white-tailed deer off-limits for hunting. This would start to change in the 1930’s when people realized that these “defenseless” animals had outgrown their ecological niche. When the white tail became legal game, “Bucky the Deer”, a local wildlife resident, had much to say about his change of status. Local historian Ed Nizalowski will cover how this local drama played out.

This meeting is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served. For more information on this, and other Candor Historical Society events, contact President Milt Dougherty by email to milton.dougherty@gmail.com or call (607) 659-7357.
