Carantouan Greenway - A Tioga County Non-Profit Network Partner

Carantouan Greenway is an all volunteer not-for-profit 501(c)(3) Land Trust and environmental organization that is registered in both Pennsylvania and New York. Officially formed in 1995, they are in their 22nd year working to educate and connect our communities to their natural resources.

They operate as a public steward in the Upper Susquehanna Watershed, focusing on Tioga and Chemung Counties in New York and Bradford County in Pennsylvania. The Greenway provides a variety of educational and outreach programs, and recreational opportunities for all ages, with an enthusiastic group of Board Members and volunteers.

Carantouan Greenway owns and maintains Wildwood Nature Reserve in the Town of Barton, a 50 acre property with varied habitat including hiking trails, a pond, and several vernal pools; and The Forbidden Path, a walking trail in Waverly for the enjoyment of our local communities. The Greenway also helps maintain the Destiny Kinal Loop Trail at Riverfront Park in Sayre, and led a group of varied partners to establish a paved biking trail along the Chemung River.

Their programs include field trips led by a trained naturalist so participants can learn about local birds, trees, wildflowers, geology, vernal pools, and other natural resources; opportunities for public outdoor enjoyment of the nature reserve and other walking trails for hikers, birders, anglers and outdoor enthusiasts; public forums given by local and regional experts covering topics such as Marcellus Shale gas drilling and climate change; presentations to local organizations on topics such as “The Evolution of Pollination” and “All About Bones”; and community river and highway cleanups.

To learn more about their programs, check the “Upcoming Events” page on their website, www.carantouangreenway.org.

Their next event is the Cloverleaf 4K Run at Wildwood Nature Reserve planned for March 19 at 10 a.m. Sign up now at www.carantouangreenway.org/upcomingevents.html.
