During a recent meeting of the Village of Owego Board, it was decided to allow SUEZ to begin the critical repair to water lines located on Lake Street in the village of Owego at the earliest date possible, which is on or before May 1.

At that same meeting, there were talks of work to be done by NYSEG, and the possible joining of projects to enable the sharing of road repair expense. By doing so, the project time would be lengthened from six weeks to possibly three months.

Jeff Soules, superintendent of Owego’s Department of Public Works, stated on Thursday that NYSEG will be starting their project when SUEZ is completed; although an exact start date has not been established.

“The start time could be some time in July,” said Soules.

During the project duration, Lake Street will be under construction, but the stores and sidewalks will remain open. Once the projects are complete, SUEZ and NYSEG will share the costs for the repair of the road.

The construction project affects the upcoming Strawberry Festival, planned for June 16 and 17, in that the vendors will have to be relocated. It is noted that the shops on Lake Street will be open and there will be activity on the sidewalks on the day of the festival.
