Coburn Free Library announces new director

The Coburn Free Library, located at 275 Main St. in Owego, recently announced the hiring of Meredith Gallaro as its new director.

In her previous position, Gallaro led the world languages department at Central Middle School in Edmond, Oklahoma. She also has a background in administration, volunteer coordination and social work – all assets to her new position, where her team-oriented approach will translate well.

Gallaro expressed her thanks for the loving way the community has welcomed her and said she is honored to step into her new role.

Gallaro stated, “I have always believed in the profound truth of a quote by Albert Einstein: ‘The only thing that you absolutely have to know is the location of the library.’ A library is a haven of knowledge, a ticket to distant places, and an enduring piece of home. It is my privilege to continue the tradition of greatness at the Coburn Free Library.”

Karen Bernardo, who has served as director of the Coburn Free Library in Owego from 2005 to 2012 and 2014 to the present, will remain at the Library as the children’s librarian. According to Bernardo, this newly created position will give her the opportunity to focus on her favorite audience – children and youth.
