Zion Lutheran School, located at 3917 Waverly Rd. in Owego, N.Y., celebrated “National Lutheran Schools Week” January 23-27, along with nearly 2,300 schools nationwide. Students in grades Pre-K through sixth grade, along with teachers and staff, participated in a different event each day.
The Discovery Center of Binghamton brought their “Star Lab” to the school on Monday, Grandparent’s Day on Wednesday featured a poetry reading and craft time, and on Thursday’s pajama day, students enjoyed a slumber party and movie. Finishing up the week, students took a field trip on Friday to Tioga County Rural Ministries where they participated in service time by helping stock the organization’s food pantry.
Kindergarten and first grade teacher, Heather Roseboom,
helped organize the National Lutheran Schools Week events and explained that since Tuesday was a snow day, students won’t miss out on the Binghamton Zoo’s visit, which was planned that day.
“We have rescheduled the zoomobile to visit the school next month,” Roseboom said.
At Grandparent’s Day, in addition to card making and crafting, students recited poems and sang songs together in the chapel. The Kindergarten and first grade class recited, “I’m Being Swallowed by a Boa Constrictor,” a fun poem by fan-favorite, Shel Silverstein.
Poems recited by fourth-grade student, Laura Ludwig, and third-grade student, Conor Kotski were selected by teacher-judges, and both students are invited to participate in an area poetry recitation to be held in April, which will also include students from Broome County.
At Grandparent’s Day, Laura recited the amusing poem, “Someone’s Toes Are In My Nose” by Bruce Lansky and Conor shared the Williams Carlos Williams’ classic, “It Is Just to Say.”
Zion Lutheran School, established in 1981, provides faith-based education and is open to children of both parishioners and the community, with bussing available from four surrounding districts.
