NYSEG conducting drone inspections of electric transmission lines

YSEG, a subsidiary of AVANGRID (NYSEG: AGR), is conducting a routine inspection of transmission lines in several communities in the Binghamton, Ithaca and Oneonta areas.

Drones being flown by Coutts Brothers (licensed commercial pilot contractors based in Randolph, Maine) will be used to conduct the aerial inspections. The inspections are part of a program to ensure safe, reliable electric service.

“The AVANGRID companies have introduced this technology for routine inspections of substations and transmission lines, and to speed up damage assessments following storms in some instances,” said Mark S. Lynch, president and CEO of NYSEG and RG&E.

He added, “It’s a safe, efficient way to get real-time information quickly, especially when access along the corridors can be difficult.”

A variety of areas will be part of the inspections to include the Vestal, N.Y. from Jan. 24 to Jan. 25. Maine, Union, and Johnson City inspections took place last week.

The inspections are done in conformance with all FAA regulations, and will take place during the hours of 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.
