Funeral Homes to be topic of upcoming historical society meeting

“Guess What Used To Be A Funeral Home?” will be the Wednesday, Jan. 18 program of the Broome County Historical Society. The meeting will be in the Decker Community Room of the Broome County Public Library, 185 Court St., Binghamton. Light refreshments will be available at 6:30 p.m. followed by a brief annual meeting and the program at 6:45.

Few people enjoy spending time in a funeral home. Many even avoid going to funeral homes at all, claiming it gives them ‘the creeps.’ Kurt Eschbach, local funeral home director, will illustrate that many of the places you have visited regularly were once funeral homes. These buildings include various stores including appliance stores, lawyer and doctor offices, and even restaurants.  Hopefully, this light-hearted look back at the history of area funeral homes will help all of us realize there is nothing to be afraid of.

Kurt Eschbach has been a funeral home director since 1989 and the owner of Hopler & Eschbach Funeral Home since 2009.  A local history buff, he is a member of the Broome County Historical Society.

The meeting is free and open to the public. For more information, contact the Historical Society at (607) 778-3572.
