The Owego Bowl, located at 1404 Taylor Rd. in Owego, N.Y. was bustling with bowlers of all ages on Nov. 25.  

A free “Black Friday Bowling” event, hosted by VFW Post 1371, VFW Men’s and Ladies Auxiliaries, the Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 480 and the American Legion Post 401 and Sons of the Legion and Ladies Auxiliary, along with the Owego Bowl, brought the community together from 1 to 5 p.m. to enjoy refreshments and try their hand at bowling.

ball and once they found it, kept their hands attached tightly to it while waiting for their turns. A few newbie bowlers got an edge to their roll by using a ball ramp, and took a few extra minutes to line their shot up just right and then watched the ball gradually roll toward the pins. Overall, bowlers of all ages and abilities appeared to have great fun playing with family and friends, with several competitive hooks and fast throws observed on a few lanes.

As many as 140 bowlers walked through the doors of Owego Bowl during the first two hours of a free “Black Friday Bowling” sponsored by area veterans groups and Owego Bowl, with an estimated 150 to 200 throughout the day.

during the first two hours. Extra pizza sheets were ordered in anticipation of more bowlers stopping by to take a turn at “Black Friday Bowling.”

Busy at the main desk greeting visitors and sizing up bowlers for shoes, Owego Bowl Owner Rick O’Neil shared, “We’ve had 140 so far,” and as he turned to glance at the clock, stated, “Looks like we have about two hours to go yet, so we expect about 150 to 200.”  

Owego Bowl offers 24 wood lanes with Brunswick machines, automatic scoring, a snack bar and other features in a homey atmosphere.

Bensley, quartermaster of VFW Post 1371, explained that local veteran groups have hosted the bowling fun day for about eight years.

In addition, VFW Post 1371 has had a long history of providing youth activities each year as a way to give back to the community, such as the upcoming children’s Christmas party.  

“It’s great for the community, especially the kids,” Bensley said.
