Hazardous Spill reported in Vestal

The New York State Department of Conservation (DEC) Region 7 Spills Response Unit received reports of a spill of a hazardous material on Wednesday, Oct. 19, 2016 at 8:30 p.m. at the Binghamton-Johnson City Wastewater Treatment Plant located at 4480 Vestal Rd. in Vestal, N.Y.

According to a press release received on Friday by the DEC, approximately 694 gallons of Sodium Hypochlorite spilled, meeting the notification requirements of Section 17-1743 of the Environmental Conservation Law.

The release summarized the spill material as being Sodium Hypochlorite, a hazardous material. Sodium Hypochlorite is a chlorine compound often used as a disinfectant or a bleaching agent.

The release also noted that there was no direct impacts to the Susquehanna River, and that the investigation into the spill is ongoing and DEC will continue to monitor the area to ensure there are no impacts to the environment.
