State Police investigate fatal crash after 90-year-old man was driving the wrong way in Nichols

On Oct. 4, 2016, at about 2:57 p.m., New York State Police at Owego responded to a report of car driving westbound in the eastbound lane as the vehicle left the Nichols rest area on State Route 17 in the Town of Nichols.

Prior to arriving, troopers were informed that the car driving the wrong way had crashed head-on into another car that was traveling eastbound on State Route 17. Both cars came to rest in the roadway.

The driver of the vehicle traveling in the wrong direction is identified as John B. McCarthy, 90, of Elmira, N.Y. McCarthy was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The driver of the car that McCarthy crashed into is identified as Sandra Spaeth, age 65, of Rome, Pa. She was transported to Robert Packer Hospital for non-life threatening injuries.

The New York State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit assisted at the scene with the investigation.
