Music will be in the air at the 37th annual Apple Festival

Newark Valley Apple Festival and the Old Hickory Long Guns

Music will abound at the 37th annual Apple Festival in Newark Valley beginning Friday evening, Sept. 30, with a free concert and chicken barbeque and continuing on Saturday, Oct. 1 through Sunday, Oct. 2. Tom Quigley, music director for the event has brought together musical groups with a wide array of sounds including bluegrass, gospel, folk, Celtic, Americana and old time folk.

Local singer and winner of several awards, Shanika Bridges will be performing at 5 p.m. on Friday and beginning at 6 p.m. the Crazy Wanders, an Octoberfest band, will entertain with music including German Band music and polkas along with drinking songs.

During the Apple Festival on Saturday music will be available on two sites, the main stage and in the Barnista. Headlining on the main stage will be Randy Meritello’s band, Horseshoe Lounge Playboys, playing their own brand of Americana Rockin’ Roots music. The main stage Saturday will also feature the Brackney String Band playing old time and Celtic music along with the Melanie and the Boys Band playing bluegrass.

On Saturday the Barnista will be alive with contra dancing as well as concerts from Tom and Marie, Triton Trio, The Hammer, Pic, and Saw, and Trish and Dannielle.

Sunday the bluegrass band Bug Tussle will headline on the main stage bringing their own version bluegrass music and the slogan they use to describe it is “Not Your Granny’s Grass”. Also playing the main stage on Sunday will be the bluegrass bands Grassanova and the Hilltoppers.

Contra dancing will be in the Barnista on Sunday as well as concerts featuring bluegrass with Tom and Marie, Gospel music with New Appalachia, and old time and folk music with Uncle Joe and the Rosebud Ramblers. Bill Gregg and company will be providing music for the contra dancing.
