Trustees and staff at the Spalding Memorial Library were saddened to learn of the passing of Dr. Bruce Boselli last November. Dr. Boselli served on the library’s Board of Trustees from 1998 to 2007.

Serving for a time as Board President, he helped guide the library through some important transitions, including the installation of its elevator and the remodeling of its restroom for handicapped-accessibility. Dr. Boselli brought the care and compassion of his work as a doctor to the Spalding Library in ways that brought lasting change to our community.  By doing so, he touched thousands of lives in a way that went beyond his work in medicine.

The Trustees of the library have chosen to honor Dr. Boselli and his years of service in a unique way.

The Spalding Library Trustees have designated a donation in memory of Dr. Boselli. In keeping with Dr. Boselli’s community-minded vision, the memorial donation has been used to begin a new Special Project Fund. The fund’s current long-term goal is the creation of a Community Pavilion in the library’s garden along the banks of the Chemung River.

In recent years, the library’s picturesque flower garden has become a popular, though still secluded, spot for family picnics and photography sessions. Community residents can be found there quietly bird watching along the river, or gregariously chatting with friends. Countless people have spent peaceful hours on one of the garden’s benches enjoying books that they have just borrowed. The community has joyfully embraced the library’s garden, but it lacks one thing – the ability to be utilized in rainy weather.

Spalding Library’s Community Pavilion will host outdoor events and performances, as well as enable picnicking families to have a roof over their heads when one is needed. Summer Reading program events will flourish in the spacious and inviting pavilion. And, visitors to the pavilion will still be able to enjoy gorgeous views of the flower garden and the Chemung River.

Words cannot encompass the gratitude of the library’s trustees and staff for Dr. Boselli’s devoted service. But hopefully, Dr. Bruce Boselli would be pleased and honored with this memorial designation. The creation of the Community Pavilion now relies upon the generosity of the communities it will serve to come to fruition.
