Stray Haven Humane Society and SPCA, located at 194 Shephard Rd. in Waverly, N.Y., an organization dedicated to protecting stray, unwanted, abused and neglected animals for over 40 years, has partnered with Pinups for Paws NYPA to promote pet adoption.

Stray Haven, a not-for-profit organization serving Tioga County, N.Y. as well as neighboring counties, and whose mission is to ensure the protection of animals through education and service, receives no funding from the state or county or other charitable agencies.  Relying solely on monies received through adoptions and generous donations, Stray Haven provides multiple services in addition to pet adoption, including dog obedience classes, pet therapy, cruelty investigations and humane education, just to name a few.

Pinups for Paws NYPA, a unique collaboration between photojournalist and professional photographer Ronald Evans, along with models from Rhonda’s Rockabilly Pin Ups, focuses on a mission to raise fund for organizations like Stray Haven by promoting pet adoption.

Tina Johnson, a model with Rhonda’s Rockabilly Pin Ups for about three years, explained that a major part of the mission, too, is a strong desire to get animals into really good forever homes.  Rhonda’s Rockabilly Pin Ups are professional models who dress-with-nostalgia and attend events where a more vintage period of time is featured, particularly the World War II and 1950’s era.

Johnson herself has adopted two dogs from Stray Haven, and shared, “Our group promotes paying it forward and giving back to charity organizations while being good stewards for the community.”

Kristi Snyder, president of the Board of Directors at Stray Haven, explained that the project has had a positive response. Snyder shared, “It’s a light to make the more difficult to adopt dogs shine. It shows how wonderful these dogs are for people.”

Snyder added that some dogs cannot go to a home that has other pets, so the photograph project has made a considerable difference in connecting these animals to the right owner match.

Snyder shared that volunteers are always needed at Stray Haven and currently there is a specific need for volunteers during the midweek hours. Donations are always welcome as well. Although pet food is a common donation, Stray Haven’s “Wish List” of supplies also includes clumping cat litter, paper towels, bleach, Gain laundry soap, and other items. Check the Wish List needs on their website, including preferred brand names.

Snyder explained, “Right now, donations of kitten chow and litter are needed most,” and added, “Gift cards are very much appreciated, too.” Gift cards allow more flexibility for Stray Haven to purchase items as needed.

For Strawberry Fest-goers, Stray Haven will be hosting a table at the event on Saturday, June 18.
