The Broome County Historical Society presents Corporal Margaret Hastings, World War II “Shangri-La” Survivor

Owego native Cpl. Margaret Hastings will be the topic for the Wednesday, May 18, program of the Broome County Historical Society.  Hastings, a member of the Women’s Army Corps (WAC) during World War II, was one of only three survivors of a plane crash in New Guinea in 1944.  She spent 47 harrowing days in the jungles there. Hastings returned to Owego as a heroine and died there in 1978.

The book, Lost in Shangri-La, by Mitchell Zuckoff, tells the story, and Emma Sedore, Tioga County Historian who assisted Zuckoff with his research, will be the evening’s featured speaker. Sedore has been Tioga County Historian since 2001 and is a recognized Historian of New York State. The author of three books, she is the recipient of the DAR History Medal Award.

The talk will begin at 6:45 p.m. preceded by light refreshments at 6:30. The program will be held in the Decker Community Room of the Broome County Library, 185 Court St., Binghamton.  The meeting is free and open to the public.
