Last weekend, the Broome-Tioga County Special Olympics Spring Games took place in Owego. Participating were 23 athletes from the Tioga Central school district this year and seven new athletes that joined the team.
The organizers received a lot of parental support as well as support from faculty and administrators. The athletes were very excited to compete and were extremely proud of their accomplishments.
Each athlete earned two medals based on their performance. Some athletes also earned a ribbon for their participation in the 4×100 meter relay. There were also athletes who earned Top Honors.
Ty Middendorf was also invited to join the BOCES Panthers team and participate at States for the mile run, which will be held in Brockport June 10-12.
Athletes participating included Leslie Adams, Steven Adams-Swansbrough, Travis Adams-Swansbrough, Trenton Adams-Swansbrough, Brandon Barney, Jaydin Bishop, Brian Chilson, Helana Chilson, Kane Ellers, Jaden Farnham, Damian Forsyth, Millie Grantham, Bradley Guiles, Brenda Guiles, Bryan Hurd, Brynn Hurd, Thomas Hurd, Jesse Merrill, Ty Middendorf, Terynce Philhower, Jarom Williams, Shani Willis and Gabrielle Woodruff.
Top honors included Brynn Hurd in the 50- and 100-meter run, Ty Middendorf in the 1500 meter run, Jaydin Bishop in the 50- and 100 meter run, Thomas Hurd in the 100- and 200-meter run, Kane Ellers in the 100- and 200-meter run, Shani Willis in Softball throw, Bryan Hurd in Softball throw, Brenda Guiles in Long Jump, and Damian Forsyth in Long Jump.
