Students from the Valley Area LEAH (Loving Education at Home) group will present Little Women, based on the novel by Louisa May Alcott, adapted by Scott Davidson, and produced by special arrangement with Pioneer Drama Service, Inc. of Englewood, Colorado. The performances will take place on May 20 at 7 p.m. and May 21 at 2 p.m., both at North Waverly Chapel on Route 34 in Waverly, N.Y.

Under the direction of homeschool moms Julie Everson and Lillian Briar, the students have been practicing lines, listening for cues, following stage direction, and getting into character. They’ve also been creating props, constructing scenery, and finalizing costumes.

Little Women was written by Louisa May Alcott and first published in 1868. It is a classic story of four sisters, growing up during the time of the American Civil War. Throughout the book, we see them maturing through their everyday hardships and joys; it is but a small collection of those memories that the actors aim to bring to life on the stage. Even today’s audiences can relate to the life experiences of the lovely Meg, talented Jo, frail Beth, and spoiled Amy.

There is no ticket fee, but donations are greatly appreciated. Proceeds will benefit community meals at the North Waverly Chapel.

The Valley Area LEAH group is part of the New York State LEAH Organization, supporting homeschooling families through resources, support groups and events. The local chapter currently consists of 43 families in New York and Pennsylvania.
