The American Red Cross of the Southern Tier will honor several people for extraordinary courage at its 7th annual Real Heroes Breakfast on Wednesday, May 11 at 7:30 a.m. at DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel, 225 Water St., Binghamton.
The Real Heroes Breakfast celebrates the Red Cross mission of alleviating human suffering by recognizing people from throughout the region who have performed heroic acts in life-threatening situations. Real Heroes will be honored in 12 categories.
The guest speaker will be long-time educator and coach Frank Hall. He is founder of the Coach Hall Foundation with a mission of providing effective means to protect against school violence and improve the quality of life in our school communities. Hall is currently dean of students and head football coach at Lakeside High School in Ashtabula, Ohio.
Proceeds from the Real Heroes Breakfast benefit the Red Cross, which provides relief to victims of disasters and helps people prevent, prepare for, and respond to emergencies. Last year, the Southern Tier Chapter helped 354 local families who faced home fires and other disaster situations, trained 8,989 people in lifesaving skills, assisted 85 military members, veterans and their families, and collected 18,334 blood donations. Volunteers and staff also went door-to-door in neighborhoods at high risk for home fires to install 228 smoke alarms and to teach people about home fire safety.
