Sweeney’s Market, located at 6518 Rte. 434 in Apalachin, N.Y., a locally owned and operated supermarket and a part of the local community since 1966 is celebrating fifty years in business. Originally started as a small “Mom and Pop” establishment on East Main Street in Apalachin, the name of which is derived from the nickname of a former owner, Sweeney, the fifty year milestone is an incredible accomplishment.

Al and Joanne Fargnoli purchased Sweeney’s Market in 1966. The building was on East Main Street, which once housed the Post Office. A fire in February 1985 destroyed that building, but within the same year, Sweeney’s was rebuilt at its current location on Route 434. Following the Fargnoli’s retirement in 1996 after 30 years, their son Al became owner, and for the last 20 years the store has continued to prosper, most recently undergoing significant remodeling.

To thank customers in the local community and surrounding area for their ongoing patronage, Sweeney’s has mailed out “hot coupons” for customers to use over the course of the next six weeks, which starts the week of April 11 and continues through the week of May 22.

Owner Al Fargnoli commented, “I would like to thank the community for their patronage, which has helped in our success.”

Sweeney’s is well known for specializing in a wide selection of meat products and experienced butchers are on-hand to custom cut orders. From sausage to chicken, pork chops to franks, nearly every steak option, among others, Sweeney’s is much more like an old-fashioned butcher shop. An advantage for offering quality products, Sweeney’s smokehouse provides the ability to make kielbasa and multiple varieties of hot dogs, which are all natural with no fillers, along with many other favorites.

Another customer favorite, certified Angus beef, considered the premier line of beef, was introduced in late 2014, and Sweeney’s remains one of the few stores in the area who have qualified to carry the line.

Sweeney’s Market offers bundle meat deals to help customers save money and one of their most popular items, homemade spiedies, are undeniably on the local spiedie leader board. In Sweeney’s deli section, customers will find top-rated delicatessen products including Boar’s Head cold cuts and cheeses.

With the growth of craft breweries throughout the state and region, Sweeney’s offers one of the largest selections of craft beers available in the area, some 300 options to choose from.

Sweeney’s Market is open seven days a week from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.
