A destination where everyone can be an artist, Art Palate, located within The Kitchen Store at 59 North Ave. in Owego, N.Y. is hosting a fundraiser event, “Painting is for the Birds,” on Saturday, April 23.

The fundraiser event benefits Jimmy J’s Avian Rescue Center, a non-profit organization founded in 2014 that promotes responsible exotic bird ownership through education and community outreach and provides a safe haven for abused, abandoned and surrendered birds through foster and permanent placement.

Participants can register for one of two sessions of “Painting is for the Birds” scheduled from 2 to 4 p.m. or from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.  Fifteen spots are open in each session and the cost is $45 per person. Participants are encouraged to arrive from twenty to thirty minutes ahead of the session start time to check in and choose a seat.

A Tapas snack plate will be served, compliments of Sue Michaels of The Kitchen Store, and glasses will be on hand for participants who come with a BYOB (bring your own beverage).

A popular activity, “sip and paint” classes at the Art Palate are coordinated and hosted by professional artist Maren Michaels, who guides guests in various painting methods. Art Palate will provide participants everything needed for the “Painting is for the Birds” event including canvas, easels, paints, brushes and aprons, and all artwork goes home with guests. No previous painting experience is necessary and beginners are encouraged to attend.

“Art is my entire life,” Michaels commented.

Michaels enjoys sharing her passion with others. She explained that painting is a confidence builder for people of any age, and added that painting is also a good form of relaxation and healing therapy. Michaels teaches one-on-one individual sessions, too, and often instructs young people who do not have art class in school.

For information, find Jimmy J’s Avian Rescue Center on Facebook or visit their website, www.jimmyjsarc.org.

Local cockatoo celebrity, Oliver, is the main subject for the “Painting is for the Birds” event. Owner Jennifer Whitcombe-Jones adopted Oliver after a situation that left her feathered friend in isolation for more than three years. Fast forward to today, and Oliver, a Moluccan cockatoo, otherwise known as a Salmon-crested cockatoo, is friendly and outgoing, and represents Jimmy J’s as an ambassador at special engagements.

A portion of the event proceeds will be used toward food, veterinarian care, transportation and other costs associated with caring for various exotic birds at the Binghamton-based rescue center managed by Whitcombe-Jones and April Pangburn.

Whitcombe-Jones and Pangburn have adopted and trained several exotic birds, and take them to community events like the Spiedie Fest and Balloon Rally, and they visit schools, churches and nursing homes, communicating information about habitats, ornithology, responsible pet ownership and other topics of interest.

To register for one of the April 23 sessions, call Jennifer at (607) 206-6693. Payment is due at time of reservation. Registration deadline is April 20, and no refunds will be granted after that date.
