The ‘Season of Love’ is celebrated in Owego

The “Season of Love” is being celebrated a little differently in the Historic Owego Marketplace this February. Merchants have made extra efforts in using unique, decorative window displays to bring a smile to the lips of shoppers and strollers.

Laura Spencer Eberly, of Riverow Bookshop, has created a book sculpture entitled “Heart of Gold” as a window display and is yarn bombing in vibrant Valentine colors the tree in front of her store.

Along with the colorful handmade knitwear that will create an “arboreal sweater”, the tree will be lit with fairy lights and festooned with beaded strands of crystals.  Humorous handcrafted bookmarks featuring romantic poetry and song lyrics will be tied on this tree with ribbon for the public to peruse and select from a free Valentine keepsake as way of a “Community Valentine” of cheer and friendship.

The Tioga Arts Council is also hosting a special outdoor display featuring Owego’s 1st ever “Kissing Tree” that is lit with small white lights and hosts pounds of glass and crystal bead strands which creates a romantic atmosphere for lovers with the Susquehanna River as a backdrop. Gracing the front window of the Tioga Arts Council is an example of an oversized rag wreath made from over 800 strips of pink, red, and white fabric wrapped and tied around a created metal frame, while inside visitors can view an outstanding photography exhibit by Broome Community College students.

With the unseasonable warm temperatures this February, it is a perfect time to take a walk (alone or with your sweetheart), treat yourself to a hot cup of cocoa, coffee or chai, and purchase small gifts for your Valentine.
