Literacy Volunteers announce tutor recruitment drive

Are you looking to make a difference in your community? Or, do you know someone who may benefit from the life changing experience of increasing their ability to do basic math, speak, read or comprehend English? If so, then Literacy Volunteers of Broome/Tioga Counties, Inc. may be able to help.

Now approaching their 50th year, Literacy Volunteers’ mission is to assist adults who want to increase their math skills and improve their ability to read, speak and comprehend the English language. Their tutors work one-to-one with adults in free, confidential, self-directed tutoring sessions for one or two hours per week, at a public location that is convenient for both the tutor and the student.

According to a recent national literacy study approximately 15 percent of the adult population in New York State lacks the ability to perform math skills and read at a basic level. This would translate to about 25,000 adults in Broome and Tioga counties. Imagine not being able to fill out a bank slip, comprehend a television listing or read a bus schedule. This also means that many of our neighbors have difficulty filling out a written form, can’t comprehend directions to complete job applications online, or even understand directions on a prescription drug bottle.

At this time Literacy Volunteers of Broome/Tioga Counties, Inc. is actively looking for tutors to work with adult learners in all areas of Tioga County. Free training and ongoing support is provided for tutors, and upon completion of training, the tutors are certified to instruct adults in basic math and English literacy and ESOL, or English for Speakers of Other Languages. If you or someone you know is interested in this rewarding and vital volunteer position, contact the Literacy Volunteers Office at (607) 778-6406.

Literacy Volunteers is also actively seeking adult students who might benefit from our one-to-one tutoring. If you know an adult who would like to increase their English reading or speaking skills, please refer them to this office, or, contact their office on their behalf. They are welcoming students from all areas of Tioga County. Student inquiries are confidential and tutoring sessions are free.

All questions regarding programs for both potential students or to register for the tutor training can be directed to the main office in Binghamton at (607) 778-6406.
