Readers’ Column for the week of Dec. 13, 2015

You may call the Owego Pennysaver Readers’ Column at (607) 687-2378 24-hours a day, or e-mail comments to readerscolumn@stny.rr.com. We reserve the right to revise or reject any message.

My husband and I volunteer for Cornell Cooperative Extension (CCE) of Tioga County. We attended their annual meeting last night and were VERY IMPRESSED with all the ways CCE Tioga helps the residents of Tioga County. Thank you Executive Director Andy Fagan, all the dedicated staff and the board members. Please support CCE Tioga whenever possible – they help us all!

If you know of anyone in the service with Candor ties, please call 659-4724 with the address. The American Legion Auxiliary in Candor will be sending some holiday greetings to them and needs updated addresses.

Mr. Marinich is at a pension of 35,000 and he has parlayed that into an additional $20,000 from the Broome County legislature and now has been given an additional Broome County job at $82,000 per year for a total of $137,000. He was handed the $82,000 job at a $14,000 increase over the person he is replacing. WOW!

On FireWire Tioga, it was posted that Berkshire EMS will cease operations on Jan. 1. Maine EMS will cover Newark Valley, and Richford with paid EMS. Berkshire will only cover Berkshire.

Reaction by physicist, author and activist Dr. Vandana Shiva to Monsanto being tried next year for ecocide and crimes against humanity and nature in the International Court of Justice in the Hague, Netherlands: “Monsanto has pushed GMOs in order to collect royalties from poor farmers, trapping them in un-payable debt, and pushing them to suicide. Monsanto promotes an agro-industrial model that contributes at least 50 percent of global anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions. Monsanto is also largely responsible for the depletion of soil and water resources, species extinction and declining biodiversity, and the displacement of millions of small farmers worldwide.” (Well, nobody is perfect.)

A history lesson. From 1924 to 1965, there was no legal immigration into this country. Reason, there had been a huge influx of immigration prior to this. We needed time to assimilate the new arrivals into our country. Not a bad idea today, if you ask me.

Wanted: Small pet carriers for transporting cats in Spay/Neuter Program. Will pay reasonable price for carriers you no longer need. Call (607) 759-7467.

I live in the Town of Nichols on a seasonal road. How does one person get to cut trees down to block it off in the wintertime? You’re supposed to be able to use. This one individual seems to think he can block it off.

Black Friday bowling went really well at Owego Bowl. We served 18 sheet pizzas, 75 pitchers of soda and the kids bowled 385 games of bowling. It was free to school aged children. I am glad they all showed up!

~

I have a 13-inch TV with a VCR and number of action tapes for adults. I would be willing to give them away to some needy person, call 659-3871.

~

I would like to shop more in Owego but the stores on Lake Street in Owego don’t open up until 11 a.m. or later and I like to get started early so I can go to a lot of stores. I would appreciate it if they would open at 8 or 9 a.m.

~

The caller last week was spot on in reference to doing away with such long terms with the planning board, board of appeals and in particular the historical commission. The terms are too long and Owego and everyone are up against it. There’s too much government with old ideas. We need new people and new ideas.

Mass shootings and murders without end. It’s not just the nut cases who are responsible, think about those thumb suckers in Congress who supposedly represent us with no gun control, no background check, no limit on ammunition, no limit on assault weapons. What a bunch of jerks. Of course it’s the Republicans that want to blame everything on mental health issues, a subject that has been beyond control for thousands of years. Why vote Republican? Let’s have some common sense representation.

~

Follow the news. According to latest reports, one person dies in the United States every 16 minutes from gun violence. In the last four years more Americans have died from guns than Americans died in the wars in Korea, Vietnam, Afghanistan and Iraq, all combined! When is our elected congress going to represent those of us who want gun safety? Congress has the answer in its hands. This is the only country in the world with such incredible, unmitigated, irresponsible violence attributed to our elected officials if you get right down to it. They have the answer and they have the control, let’s see if we can get some action from the Republicans holding everyone back from a sensible solution.

~

Are you ready for a big shoot out in your neighborhood? If Republican candidate Trump is elected guns will be everywhere! Guns are the answer according to the Republicans. Guns don’t cause damage, people cause damage. What the heck, give everybody a gun we’ll all have a shoot out thanks to Trump and the Republican buffoons.

~

I have the perfect solution for the heroin epidemic. We make it legal and pretty soon we will have no more people around that make it a problem. Get what I mean?

How many residents of Apalachin knew there was a vote for a new fire station Nov. 17? This was kept very quiet. There was not much information about the vote in local newspapers or television. I believe they did not want the residents to know much about the vote or when it was. It was voted down twice before. I think this was very sneaky.

News flash! Another scandal will be swept under the rug by the lame stream media. That fact is that Isis is already here in the U.S.A. Nobama instead, has directed Homeland Security to concentrate on illegal aliens and global warming. Give me a break! There are presently 1,000 cases of Muslim violence being investigated by the FBI. Senator Sessions has revealed that 239,000 immigrants came into the U.S. from terrorist countries during nobama’s seven-year regime. Only a buffoon would call these attacks by Muslim radicals workplace violence or spontaneous and random actions. We’re being ruled by kooks, phonies, incompetence, and in some cases traitors. God save the U.S.A.!

This is for the people and myself who have e-cigarettes. This morning one of the batteries was charging on the computer and it blew the end out. It started a fire on the computer desk. If my girlfriend hadn’t have been here the house would have burned down. I just wanted to let everyone to know not to do your batteries at nighttime when you are sleeping.

~

This is for the follow the news moron. She should know exactly what her hero nobama is doing by freeing up $250 billion to Iran in return for a phony and partly secret treaty. Guess how much of that $250 billion will end up at Isis central? How can nobama’s Marxists supporters be so darn stupid!

The New York State Department of Transportation did a great job in revamping the roadway and the sidewalks on North Avenue in the Village of Owego. But in the process they sure did screw up the traffic lights! The traffic light balance between cross traffic and thru traffic was ideal before they started their work. Now it is so screwed up that sometimes the cross traffic has to wait for five full minutes for the light to change to allow them to turn out onto North Avenue. Who decides these things? What sort of engineers do they have working for them?

~

I have a complaint on people taking grocery carts from Price Chopper. I believe they cost a lot of money and it is illegal. If the Owego Police happen to see them they will write them a ticket or have them return the carts. Everybody have a Merry Christmas and thanks for listening!

~

I am calling in regards to the Southside Drive construction project. This was a hush hush deal set up by the Tioga County IDA and Economic Development offices. The developer is a close relative of someone, so the county kept it as quiet as possible, no public referendum, no developers statements as to what the plans are. It’s another project basically being forced on the residents. The county did nothing with the land for 15 years and now some type of county offices and housing are going in. I wonder if the developer will pay taxes.

~

The Lights on the River was very good and fun. The fireworks were the best I have ever seen! One complaint, no public restrooms or port-a-johns were available for the event.

~

If you are following the Trump adventure you’ll know that he is leading the clowns of the Republican presidential candidate’s car over the cliff.

~

I agree with Donald Trump about banning Muslims from the United States. We can’t keep on living like this. People are worried every day about their every move. Trump is the strongest candidate. Every one of the other candidates is so weak they’d be just like our present leader.

~

This is an answer to a comment that was in last week’s Pennysaver about HEAP. HEAP has no control on how much the vendors charge. I checked that out about three years ago. I suggest you find another vendor.

~

What do people see and hear when they listen to Donald Trump these days. Of course, they see the Republican frontrunner. What does Trump’s success say about the rank and file Republicans in the United States? Think before you vote this time folks.

~

I wholeheartedly agree with Donald Trump about halting Muslims entering this country. If you have lung cancer, any good doctor tells you to first stop smoking cigarettes. Face facts, besides there was a law passed in 1952 that allowed the president to limit immigration if he deems it necessary.

~

In this free country every church has the right to accept all of those who agree with their principles.

What kind of world do we have when people are told to put all their stuff out on the curb three weeks before Christmas to check for bedbugs? I am just so annoyed by this and these people have no place to go or anyplace to move into. They were told they could not go back into their apartment for two weeks. It’s just not right. It’s not their decision!

My name is Donna, and I need a service dog. There are no service dog training people who issue dogs for my needs that serve this area, so I have to find a dog and train it myself – for balance mainly. I started a GoFundMe page to help raise the funds. If you want to help, the page is located at https://www.gofundme.com/service-dog-fund.
