Thanks to the John Mack Foundation (JMF) and in recognition of Sudden Cardiac Arrest Awareness Month, the Apalachin Youth Football League (AYFL) was one of four local organizations that recently received an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) from the foundation.

A portable electronic device that automatically diagnoses a life-threatening heart rhythm and in turn helps reestablish an effective heart rhythm, the use of AED’s expands life-saving opportunities when trained individuals can assist in critical situations prior to the arrival of emergency medical technicians.

The JMF, named for John Mack, a 17-year old Binghamton High School junior who collapsed in full cardiac arrest after a stick check to his chest during a club lacrosse game, lost his life on Nov. 30, 2006. A defibrillator to restart John’s heart was too late, arriving at the field 19 minutes after the incident. Removed from life support after three days, John suffered irreparable brain damage. John Mack was also an organ donor. Shortly after John’s death, a benefit in his memory raised funds to purchase 21 AED’s, in recognition of his lacrosse jersey number.

Today, the John Mack Southern Tier Shoot Out, a two-day lacrosse tournament held annually in February at the Great Binghamton Sports Complex, draws players, coaches and spectators from all over the Northeast and Canada. A portion of the tournament proceeds are given to the John Mack Foundation, which then purchases AED’s for donation to local organizations.

Dedicated to the prevention of sudden cardiac death through education and life-saving defibrillators, JMF has donated nearly 40 AED’s to sports clubs and other non-profit organizations throughout the United States and Canada.

At a presentation held at AYFL’s end-of-year banquet, Robert Mack, father of John Mack, presented AYFL President Justin Wilt with an AED for the league.

Wilt shared, “The AYFL is very thankful to receive the AED,” and added, “The Apalachin Fire Department has agreed to offer training to AYFL members on its use.”

Wilt explained that although he hopes the AYFL will never have to use the AED, it is a significant contribution to the league and will remain available and ready for use, with the advantage of being portable to take along to away games. Wilt commented that as many as twenty people will be trained in its use, which will support the 130 or more regular players in the league as well as all of the spectators who attend games.

Raising awareness and impressing upon non-profit organizations the critical need for CPR/AED-trained individuals is the mission of JMF.
