Community Foundation awards grants to area nonprofits

Twenty-five organizations in the region, including 22 in Broome, Chenango and Tioga counties, received grants totaling $311,662 from the Community Foundation for South Central New York’s Community Fund and special funds, in the fall 2015 competitive and annual grant cycles.

Sixty organizations submitted proposals for over $656,324 in funding requests. The successful grants, which were awarded through a volunteer panel and board review process, will be used for a variety of capital projects, operations and programs at the organizations.

Community Fund Grants were awarded to the following: Camp Ahwaga, $11,500 for insurance costs for the 2016 camp season (Tioga); Catholic Charities of Tompkins/Tioga, $10,000 for emergency financial assistance for participants (Tioga); Deposit Foundation, $10,000 for general operating support (Broome); Family Enrichment Network, $15,000 to expand an adult literacy program into Tioga County (Tioga); Literacy Volunteers of Broome/Tioga, $15,000 for general operating support (Broome/Tioga); Tioga County Boys and Girls Club, $15,000 for general operating support (Tioga); and the United Presbyterian Church of Binghamton, $9,466 for a community meal coordinator position (Broome).

Special Funds Small Grants were awarded to the Boys and Girls Club of Binghamton, $4,500 for a summer 2016 camp program (Broome); Jewish Community Center, $4,770 for toddler classroom renovations (Broome); Liberty Partnership Program, $900 for production of a film highlighting effects of poverty (Broome); the Rescue Mission, $2,906 for hygiene kits to distribute at community meal programs (Broome); Trinity Church Community Canteen, $2,630 for tables for a community meal program (Broome); and Tioga Opportunities Department of Aging, $5,000 to support the meals on wheels program (Tioga).

The Community Foundation for South Central New York, a nonprofit organization founded in 1997 and headquartered in Johnson City, encourages and facilitates personal and institutional philanthropy throughout the region by managing 89 funds established by donors to achieve specific charitable goals. From these funds, the Foundation has awarded over $8.9 million in grants to the area’s nonprofits, schools, and municipalities to help address community concerns and improve the quality of life in the region.
