October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

The Tioga County Council on Alcoholism and Substance Abuse, Inc. (TCCASA) recently announced their participation in the National Red Ribbon Week, which started on Oct. 23, and runs until Oct. 31.

The National Family Partnership (NFP) organized the first Nationwide Red Ribbon Campaign. NFP provides drug awareness by sponsoring the annual National Red Ribbon Celebration. Since it began in 1985, the Red Ribbon has touched the lives of millions of people around the world. In response to the murder of DEA Agent Enrique Camarena, angered parents and youth in communities across the country began wearing Red Ribbons as a symbol of their commitment to raise awareness of the killing and destruction cause by drugs in America.

Today, the Red Ribbon serves as a catalyst to mobilize communities to educate youth and encourage participation in drug prevention activities. This year in celebration of Red Ribbon Week, TCCASA has partnered with the Owego Free Academy to raise awareness about the dangers of drugs. They will be at the school on Oct. 26 handing out Red Ribbons for the students. On Wednesday, Oct. 28, they will celebrate by asking students to wear Red that day. The homeroom with the most number of students wearing Red will win a pizza party. They will also be presenting the school with a proclamation signed by the Mayor of Owego.
