Readers’ Column for the week of Sept. 13, 2015

You may call the Owego Pennysaver Readers’ Column at (607) 687-2378 24-hours a day, or e-mail comments to readerscolumn@stny.rr.com. We reserve the right to revise or reject any message.

Some members of the Village of Owego Fire Department want to form a Fire District. Most of them do not live in the village and do not pay village taxes. Projections are that the cost to village residents for fire protection could increase by 37 percent with a fire district. If you think that a fire district is not needed and will be too expensive then attend the Special Board Meeting on Monday, Sept. 14, at 7 p.m. at 56 Main Street and give the village board your opinion.

Tomas Young, the Army Vet who wrote this letter to Bush and Cheney, died on November 10, 2014: “I would not be writing this letter if I had been wounded fighting in Afghanistan against those forces that carried out the attacks of 9/11. Had I been wounded there I would still be miserable because of my physical deterioration and imminent death, but I would at least have the comfort of knowing that my injuries were a consequence of my own decision to defend the country I love. I would not have to lie in my bed, my body filled with painkillers, my life ebbing away, and deal with the fact that hundreds of thousands of human beings, including children, including myself, were sacrificed by you for little more than the greed of oil companies, for your alliance with the oil sheiks in Saudi Arabia, and your insane visions of empire.”

I live in Southside Owego and was wondering why a Campville ambulance is now servicing my area from a fire station more than 20 minutes away? I called the town and they said they don’t know anything about it. If they don’t, who the heck does?

Poor Kim Davis, the Kentucky County Clerk, who was jailed for not following the law by refusing to issue same-sex marriage licenses. Didn’t she realize that only Obama and Hillary could break laws with impunity and get away with it?

Is there anyone local that repairs washing machines and refrigerators? Please reply in this column.

I live in Apalachin and am really surprised how many children and adults do not know which side of the road you are supposed to walk on. I have seen many people walking on the wrong side. The law says you are supposed to walk facing traffic, that way you can see what is coming at you. I guess they don’t teach this anymore. I just hope no one gets hurt.

Wow! Apparently someone in the readership area thinks that wiping a computer clean means using a cloth to remove the dust and grime. And people think we don’t need to upgrade our education standards?

I’ve recently noticed five or more oil tankers, now being stored on the Route 38/96 railroad track, between Park Settlement Road and just before the Owego Creek Bridge and Route 38. These oil tankers are also within 350′ of the Millennium Natural Gas Pipeline and peoples’ homes on Park Settlement Road and Route 38, which is zoned light agricultural. Additionally, these oil tankers are within 350′ of Owego Creek, which is part of this entire valley’s watershed and also just above the northern end of the Clinton Street Ballpark Aquifer, which is a federally protected aquifer that supplies drinking water to all of Tioga and Broome County. The last I knew, the railroad tracks along Route 38/96 were to be used for transport, not storing someone’s oil. I would certainly hope that the Town of Owego Supervisor and any applicable local, state and federal authorities, would correct this dangerous situation immediately.

We believe that the millions of dollars being paid by American taxpayers to support Planned Parenthood should stop immediately! Those monies should and could be used to help other organizations such as the Community Health Centers all over the United States.

Thank you for the letter explaining the cheerleader situation. Greatly appreciated!

I’m doing my happy dance! I have been calling the Pennysaver for five years about the ridiculous orange and black barrels all over the middle of this village for years and years! On Strawberry Festival they even painted it to look like a strawberry. The barrels are finally gone! They have been there for five years! Hurray! Hurray!

What is wrong with this country anymore? Scandal after scandal and senate hearing after senate hearing and nothing is determined or corrected. No one is guilty and no one is responsible anymore. No one is prosecuted. The judicial system is a farce. Obama runs over the constitution and the attorney general turns his back on enforcing the laws of the land while a lady goes to prison because she is obeying her conscience. The IRS attacks conservatives and nothing is done. The nobama Iran capitulation treaty is pushed through. The republicans do not defund to oppose the nobama regime. Planned Parenthood sells fetal body parts and no one but Fox News and a few others protest this repulsive action. The American public is mostly quiet to get their freebies. You see trash and vulgarity by the Hollywood Marxists and much of the performing buffoons. I am ashamed and appalled by what this country has become. God help the USA!

I don’t think Cal Harris should be given another trial. It’s a waste of taxpayer money.

The Clintons are involved in scandal after scandal throughout the years. I think the FBI should reopen the death of Clinton Aide Vincent Foster. While his death was being investigated Hillary and associates were cleaning out the files in Foster’s office. Rumors were he was having an affair with Hillary Clinton. Foster’s death was ruled a suicide.

I have to say it upsets me greatly to read articles of animal abuse. If people cannot care for animals financially or emotionally, please don’t have animals. I am relieved there are people in the community who are reporting such things and that action is taken and I really hope these people involved are appalled and embarrassed when they are brought into court and truly hope they are never allowed animals in their lives again. I wonder – if this is their treatment of animals, what is their treatment of people or children? It’s really sad and disheartening to think people can be so cruel.
