The Village Board of Owego has voted to proclaim Sept. 27 as a Hunger Awareness Day, urging the citizens of Owego to support the Tioga County CROP Hunger Walk. On the afternoon of Sunday, Sept. 27, registering from 1:30 to 2 p.m. at the Owego United Methodist Church, walkers will be stepping off at 2 p.m.

Organizers are requesting that each walker bring a nonperishable food item with them to the walk to be collected at the registration, along with collected monetary donations.

They walk to help the community become aware of and concerned about hunger and its causes while raising funds to help stop hunger both locally and globally.

A safe and very visible approximate 4-mile route is designed to follow around the village of Owego, but a shorter route is available for those unable to complete the full walk. Locally, seven food pantries or meal sites receive a portion of the amount raised to provide food to neighbors in need. The walk will end at the First Presbyterian Union Church, where the walkers will be greeted with a variety of refreshments.

Join with others from Tioga County, bringing together people of different faiths, cultures, and all age groups. Over 1 billion people are hungry worldwide. That’s one out of every seven people in the world.

CROP stands for Communities Responding to Overcome Poverty. You can receive walker donation envelopes prior to the walk by calling (607) 239-0121.
