Barton resident earns Eagle Scout Award

William Lanning, of Barton, N.Y., recently earned the Eagle Scout Award, the Boy Scout of America’s highest advancement. Lanning’s Eagle Scout Court of Honor took place on Aug. 20, 2015 at the Church of the Nazarene in Owego, N.Y. Lanning is a member of Troop 36 in Nichols.

For his Eagle Project, Lanning “reclaimed” the Nichols Dunham Cemetery from neglect. He and his volunteers cleared brush, built a sign, straightened headstones, filled in holes, etc. There were 26 volunteers working a total of more than 190 hours. Supplies for the project were provided by area businesses.

He and his troop have also served the community through food drives and various projects benefiting Ransom Park in Tioga Center and Community Care Network of Nichols. Lanning attends Tioga Central High School and is active in the Owego Nazarene Church.

Lanning is the son of Michael and Cathy Lanning of Barton.
