Last week, State Senate Candidate for the 52nd District, Republican Fred Akshar toured local businesses across Tioga County with the County Legislative Chair Marte Sauerbrey and Tioga County Chamber of Commerce President Gwen Kania.

“Tioga County is full of hardworking small business owners striving to make their businesses succeed, and government should be helping them, not getting in their way,” said Fred Akshar.

Akshar added, “Tioga County businesses deserve a state senator who will actively listen to their needs and concerns and properly represent their interests in Albany. I’ll work hard to be that representative.”

Akshar’s tour started in Owego, visiting Tri-Town Insurance on Front Streeet and Tender Loving Care by Maureen and Ahwaga Paint and Floor Covering in Owego. The tour continued through News Radio WEBO’s downtown studio, Black Bird Bakery, Harris’ Diner and the Community Shop Grocery Store on North Avenue.

In addition to small businesses in Owego, Akshar also visited local non-profits such as A New Hope Center, which offers comprehensive services to all crime victims and Tioga Opportunities, Inc. Center for Aging Services.

“Our campaign is all about energy, passion and commitment to serving this community,” Akshar said. “I want to meet with as many families, business owners, community organizations and taxpayers as I can between now and Election Day.”

The Tioga business tour closed with two larger businesses, Tioga Hardwoods and Wagner Lumber, which produce high-quality lumber for distribution around the world. A massive fire destroyed Wagner Lumber’s Owego facility in February of 2014, but repairs are almost complete, and the new facility will be in full operation in October.

“It’s so inspiring to see local businesses bounce back from the devastating floods and this recent terrible fire to thrive again,” said Akshar. “Tioga County businesses owners embody perseverance and hard work, I’m running for State Senate to help them continue to succeed.”

“I spent time in with Fred while on the tour and let me tell you, I was impressed,” said Martha Sauerbrey, chair of the Tioga County Legislature.

Sauerbrey continued, “We took him on a brief walking tour in the Village of Owego where he had a chance to speak with business owners and hear about what is important to them. In the afternoon we toured both Tioga Hardwoods and Wagner Lumber. We learned so much about the great companies we have in Tioga County.”
