Cheese Making 101 at the Bement-Billings Farmstead

Cheese Making 101 at the Bement-Billings Farmstead

Cheese Making 101 at the Bement-Billings FarmsteadCheese Making 101 will take place at the Bement-Billings Farmstead, located on Route 38 in Newark Valley on July 18, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Participants will hear ethnic history of cheeses and make a farmhouse cheddar and a soft dessert cheese. Call Leslie at (607) 642-5412 by July 14 to register and get your list of equipment needed.

Laryssa Zahajkewycz, an experienced cheese maker, will facilitate the workshop. The fee is $50, and $45 for Newark Valley Historical Society members.

This Cheese Making workshop will connect participants to the organic life style movement, as shown by today’s popular gardening and backyard farming magazines. It supports those seeking knowledge of their food source and will give an appreciation for cheese making throughout history. It dispells the mystery of how cheese came to be and how it was a “happy accident”.

The Bement-Billings farm produced many hundreds of pounds of cheese, butter, bees wax and lumber while an active farm in the 19th century.

This project is made possible, in part, with public funds administered by The Arts Council of the Southern Finger Lakes and funded by NY Council on the Arts, hosted by Newark Valley Historical Society. Visit www.nvhistory.org to learn more.
