Candor Library Summer Reading is All About Heroes

It’s Summer Reading time at the Candor Library, and this year’s theme is “Every Hero Has a Story”. So grab your mask, tie on your cape, and head down to the library.

Candor Free Library’s Summer Reading program begins Monday, July 6 and continues for six weeks through Saturday, Aug. 15.

Readers of all ages – from “just beginning” through high school – are invited to delve into new books and savor old favorites at the library. Each reader can pick up a reading log, and every week there will be a prize or activity at the circulation desk.

Summer readers will fill out a ticket for each book they read to enter the end-of-summer drawing for a Barnes & Noble Gift certificate. Reading categories are: Beginning Reader – 2nd Grade; 3rd Grade – 6th Grade; and teen through 12th Grade

There are more than books at the library. Preschoolers can check out backpacks full of picture books and activities that support developing reading and math skills. The ten theme-based backpacks include “construction machines”, “dinosaurs”, and “exploring your community”. Each backpack also contains an activity book for children to keep, with mazes, dot-to-dots and things to cut out and make, such as a finger puppet or something to hang in the window.

Children eight years and older can check out “Explore” bags. Each canvas tote bag contains a nonfiction book and supplies to keep a kid engaged for a couple of hours or more. Kids can explore cooking, knitting, crochet, weaving, science, and photography.

If you are looking for a cool place to hang out on a hot day, the library is the place to be. There is a shelf full of board games, and wireless for those who want to bring their laptops. Or curl up with a good book.

Candor Free Library is located at 2 Bank St., just behind the Village Hall. Summer hours for the library are: Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 2 to 5 p.m.; on Tuesday from 2 to 5 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m.; Thursday from 10 a.m. to noon, 2 to 5 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m.; and on Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon and 2 to 4 p.m.
