A farm tour can be a fun day trip during the summer for you and your family, or perhaps just plan a stop to browse or purchase locally made products.  When you buy food that is produced locally, it is good for the farmer and the consumer, as well as for the community.

A farm available for group tours, Heaven Llama Farm & Pots by Gail, located at 289 Dawson Hill Rd. in Spencer, N.Y. features llamas, alpacas, horses, chickens, peacocks, ducks and “Chewie” the camel, as well as a pottery studio. Call (607) 589-4886 for information or to make an appointment.

Part of the Finger Lakes Cheese Trail, Englebert Farms, located at 182 Sunnyside Rd. in Nichols, N.Y., offers organic meats and 18 or more varieties of organic cheeses and vegetables. At West Creek Family Farm, located at 238 Back West Creek Rd. in Newark Valley, N.Y., you’ll find maple syrup, farm fresh eggs, goat milk soaps, lotion bars and soy candles. West Creek raises beef and dairy cows, various sheep and angora rabbits. Vegetables, herbs and medicinal herbs can be found at Victory Hill Farm, located at 21 Victory Hill Rd. in Richford, N.Y. Victory Hill will be participating at the Owego Farmers Market this summer, and also provides horse trail rides at the farm. For information or to schedule a visit, call (607) 657-8644.

Twist of Fate Family Farm, located at 96 Targosh Rd. in Candor, N.Y., offers a variety of raw and processed fibers for spinners, handspun yarns, handcrafted items and quilts. At Twist of Fate you’ll also find angora rabbits and three male alpacas named Elvis the Elder, Aspen and Dutch, as well as five sheep and an ewe. Educational tours full of fun for the whole family can be found at Side Hill Acres, located at 79 Spencer Rd. in Candor, N.Y., producers of award winning goat milk cheese. Tour the cheese plant, milk house and the goat barn. Many goat milk products are for sale, including cheeses, fudge, a health and beauty line, and unusual gifts. Enjoy a day out with alpacas at Alpacalachin Farms, located at 2571 Chestnut Ridge Rd. in Apalachin, N.Y.
