Get the skinny on Dragonflies

Dragonflies and damselflies play an under-appreciated role in our local ecosystem. Expert predators, they feed on mosquitoes and other flying pests. Apart from being misunderstood, they are also exceptionally varied and beautiful.

This is the perfect time of year to get out and search for dragonflies and damselflies in their natural habitat. Learn how to identify them on Wednesday, May 27, at 6:30 p.m. at the Spalding Memorial Library.

Dr. Meena Haribal of Cornell University will be on hand at the Spalding Memorial Library to share her insights on damselflies and dragonflies. She will be sharing tips on locating them in your environment.

Dr. Haribal has recently authored the book Damselflies and Dragonflies in the Cayuga Lake Region and the Vicinity. She is a chemical ecologist at Cornell’s Boyce Thompson Institute. In addition to her work with dragonflies and damselflies, she is also renowned for her work with birds and butterflies and moths. She has been leading field trips for the Cornell Lab of Ornithology for many years, as well as taking part in “Moth Nights” for New York State Parks. She is also active in the Finger Lakes Native Plant Society.

Copies of Dr. Haribal’s latest book will be available for purchase. The Susquehanna Valley Audubon Society sponsors this presentation. The Spalding Memorial Library is located at 724 South Main St. in Athens.
