Owego Rotary Club’s Paul Harris Fellowship awards

In appreciation for their service to our community, the Owego Rotary Club will honor two Tioga County community members by presenting them with Paul Harris Fellowship awards. The award ceremony will take place at the Owego Rotary Club’s evening meeting at the Owego Treadway Inn on Tuesday, May 12. Owego Rotary has made a $1,000 donation in each of the honoree’s name to the Rotary International Foundation.

The Rotary Foundation works to advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace by supporting local and global activities. The guest speakers for the dinner will be Jennifer Musa, PhD and Maureen Hankin, RDH, MPH. They will present information about the SUNY Broome Health for Haiti project, which is working to bring clean water, solar power and technology training to Haiti – a project similar in nature to many Rotary International Foundation projects.

The following are a few of the Rotary International Foundation works around the world: Providing vocational training for teachers who are establishing an early childhood education center in South Africa; supplying water filters, toilet blocks, and hygiene training to prevent fluorosis in a community in India; funding a scholarship for a medical professional in Italy to research treatments that minimize mortality rates among premature babies; offering peace-building seminars to 200 teachers and 1,300 students in Uganda; distributing treated mosquito nets and offering medical services that help prevent malaria in Mali; and, Rotary’s No. 1 priority – eliminating polio from the world.

Cocktail hour is at 5:30 p.m. and dinner is at 6 p.m. on May 12, 2015. The cost is $15.00. Call (607) 687-5502 for reservations. The public is invited.
