Opinion: Equipment is needed, or the public is at risk

Dear Editor,

I have been a lifeguard at the Marvin Park for the last two summers, and I plan on continuing my employment there this summer. When the flood came in 2011, the pool suffered some minor damages and was closed for the summer of 2012. Upon returning in 2013, the lifeguards were made aware that some of the life saving equipment had been lost in the flood, or had never existed there in the first place. At the moment, the Marvin Park pool does not have a viable backboard, an AED or rescue tubes. This equipment is necessary for lifeguards to be able to correctly perform rescues and save lives.

On several occasions the life guards, my co-workers and I, have requested that the village Department of Public Works purchase new equipment for the pool; but after working two summers for the village, I have not seen any effort to do so. By continuing to operate this facility without the necessary equipment, the village is putting the safety of the public at risk.

Sincerely,

Dylan Richmond
